ROY ELLWOOD, president of the York & District FA, has added to the tributes paid to one of York’s leading sportsmen and supporters, Guy Mitchell.

Ellwood was a lifelong friend of Mitchell, who died in York Hospital after a short illness at the age of 82.

Recalled Ellwood, who is also the president of the York Sunday Morning Football League: “After I came out of my two years of national service I joined Guy in playing for the York Wednesday club.

“He was truly one of York’s football heroes. He was a great supporter of sport in the city, especially football. He did a heck of a lot for sport and his passing is a very sad loss.”

Ellwood added that his friend was the first treasurer of the York Sunday Football League and also served on the York FA , where he was a vice-president, for almost 50 years.

Added Ellwood: “Guy’s father Tom provided the first trophy to the York Sunday League and then two or three years ago Guy replaced the trophy when it was looking a bit battered.”
