City of York II’s resurgence in the Yorkshire League premier division was halted by Leeds Adel I at Huntington School.

Having gained maximum points from their last two outings, York targeted a third win on the spin but finished on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller.

City got off to the better start only to be denied by good saves from the Adel ’keeper before the visitors took the lead from a rebound after a stop on the line from David Clamp.

Just minutes before half-time, Adel doubled their advantage and York fell further behind early in the second half. A deflection off an upright made it 4-0.

York then produced an outstanding display in the final ten minutes which almost saw them snatch a point.

Man of the match Dan Ellwood’s penetrating run created space for Dan Tompkins to shoot, Alex Fletcher making sure with the final touch.

Minutes later Fletcher got another, and then, with just three minutes left, Tompkins bamboozled several Adel defenders before slipping the ball in from a tight angle.

City poured forward, and almost grabbed an equaliser in the dying seconds when a Rob Newton touch to a Freddie Heijbroek cross went agonisingly wide.
