NEW York City shot-stopper Aaron McCarey is a 12-yard terror to forwards.

Aside from his debut for City in the goalless draw against Rochdale, McCarey’s only other senior appearance this season came in Wolves’ Johnstone’s Paint Trophy victory over Walsall when he saved two penalties in a shoot-out triumph.

Admitting that facing spot-kicks is one of his specialities, the 6ft 3in Irishman added: “I like penalties and it was my Wolves debut so it couldn’t have gone any better.

“It was a good couple of days for me.

“I enjoyed it and it will live long in the memory, although you soon get brought back down to earth if you’re not on your toes in the next game.”

Despite his relative inexperience at club level, McCarey has already featured in a full Republic of Ireland squad, receiving a call-up in June for the showcase friendly with Spain in the New York Yankees Stadium.

New Eire manager Martin O’Neill has the likes of Keiren Westwood, David Forde, and Darren Randolph – the respective number ones at Sunderland, Millwall and Birmingham – at his disposal, but other contenders like Newcastle’s Rob Elliot and Stephen Henderson, at West Ham, will find club games harder to come by, meaning McCarey knows a positive contribution at Bootham Crescent will not hinder his hopes of further recognition from his country.

He said: “Getting called up to the senior squad was a great experience.

“It doesn’t really get any better than playing the world and European champions.

“Unfortunately, I did not get on the pitch but just to be a part of it was brilliant. It’s one of my targets over the next 18 months or so to get myself back in the squad and there are opportunities there if you are playing regular football.”
