BEN DAVIES hasn’t ruled out an extension to his loan stay at York City when his agreement ends in January.

The 18-year-old, on loan from Preston North End, has reiterated his desire to forge a career at Deepdale but says he is enjoying life with the Minstermen and will “assess” his situation in the New Year.

“I said at the start that as long as I am playing games here and enjoying it here I am happy to stay, obviously until January, and then we will assess it again,” he said.

“But I do want to rejoin Preston eventually and hopefully get some games for them.”

Davies believes he hasn’t been in top form for the Minstermen in recent matches, and has assured supporters there is more to come as he continues to be a fixture of manager Nigel Worthington’s back four.

“I came to get game time and start games at League level so, obviously doing that, I am pleased and happy. I am really enjoying it,” he added.

“I am hoping my form will pick up a bit better soon. I am not maybe playing as well as I can but you go through spells like that.

“If I keep working hard, it will pick up soon. Playing game after game you are going to expect to have a dip but, hopefully, it won’t last too long.

“I feel like I am doing okay – nothing major – so who knows what will happen if I keep playing games and doing well?”

It’s still less than a year since Davies made his senior debut for Preston against Coventry and, having now made 14 appearances at York since his arrival – only Ryan Jarvis and Michael Ingham have played more – he says one of the biggest lessons he is learning is how to prepare for games.

“I am learning about recovery and making sure your body is ready,” Davies explained. “There’s more than one game a week at the moment and playing Saturday and Tuesday is hard work.

“You have to look after yourself and recover properly.”

On the contribution of Worthington, a full-back himself, to his development, he said: “I am always learning from him every day in training. He is always giving me pointers.

“It’s a great help to have him around the training ground and coaching me every day.”

Davies was as thrilled as supporters with Tuesday night’s first-half blitz against Scunthorpe and would be delighted for a repeat performance at Cheltenham tomorrow.

“It was unbelievable for the fans and unbelievable to play in to be fair,” he said. “I couldn’t believe we were 4-0 up inside about 35 minutes.

“Obviously we then just needed to keep it tight and see out the three points. We are looking for a big start again tomorrow, to try to get a few goals, and keep a clean sheet.”
