York City Ladies storm to Barnsley win
11:53am Wednesday 30th October 2013 in Sport
YORK City Ladies football team’s searing start to the season continued with a 2-0 beating of Barnsley.
Such was York’s dominance that the only threat on their goal came in the opening minute when goalkeeper Chloe Precious tipped a rising shot on to the crossbar.
After that incursion York took command, going ahead just two minutes later. Megan Bramham’s astute pass teed up Lauren Shuttleworth to score.
It took only another six minutes to double the lead, this time Jazz Whitwell was the punisher.
For the rest of the first half York dominated with full-backs Josie Hewson, the team’s star performer, and Emily Dingley effectively employed as all-out attackers.
Even against the wind after the interval York comfortably dealt with Barnsley’s long-ball approach.
Beth Clayton assumed control in centre midfield, while substitute Ellie Harding showed her potential with a strong positive performance up front.
Said manager Kayleigh Davis: “This game showed the ladies’ hard work is certainly paying off with some of their best football to date.”
Next up for York is a clash against Guiseley.
