Luke O’Neill backs York City striker Wes Fletcher
DEFENDER Luke O’Neill has backed the predatory instinct of his former Burnley team-mate Wes Fletcher.
The Slough-born full-back is not surprised Fletcher, who has netted three times in York City’s last two League games, is fulfilling the potential he first witnessed at Turf Moor.
Said on-loan O’Neill: “I rated him at Burnley, where I saw him play for the reserves and a bit in the first team.
“He just needed a run of first-team games and, now he’s getting that, I think he will do really well for York and push his career on. He’s a strong lad who has a good eye for goal.
“I saw him score a few for Burnley and I think we have a couple of players who can get goals here.”
O’Neill, who has played in a number of different roles for previous clubs Leicester, Tranmere, Kettering, Mansfield and Burnley, is now hoping to carve out a reputation in his preferred position, adding: “I am fairly two-footed and can play on either side of the pitch.
“I’ve played at left-back, centre-half, centre midfield and on the right wing and will play in any of those positions if required but, really, I want to play right-back. That’s why I am here.”
O’Neill, meanwhile, bears no malice towards City despite his new club being responsible for his biggest disappointment in football.
The 6ft defender was a member of the Mansfield team beaten by the Minstermen over two legs in the 2012 Conference play-off semifinals after Matty Blair’s extra-time goal that sent the victors to Wembley and on their way to eventual promotion to the Football League.
O’Neill said: “Those matches were probably the biggest games I have been involved in.
“I had largely been playing youth football before I went to Mansfield and we had a great season back then but so did York and they went through which was fair play to them. I felt like I had a great season though and I ended up getting my move to Burnley.”
