Motorsport: Shane Stoney rises to Mini championship challenge
9:49am Wednesday 16th October 2013 in Sport
TEENAGE racer Shane Stoney stormed to the Mini Challenge Championship with 13 wins in 17 races.
The 18-year-old driver from Nun Monkton, near York, dominated the competition in his BMW Mini Cooper, winning at some of this country’s famous circuits, while also winning at Zandvoort in Holland.
Rounds were held at Snetterton, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Castle Combe and Donington.
Stoney went into the final round at Don ington knowing he needed only one podium finish from any of the three remaining races to clinch the title. With pole position sealed on the last lap of qualifying, Stoney went on to lead the first race from start to finish.
The Championship was won with two rounds to spare, which meant he could retire his car and concentrate on helping the rest of his Coastal Racing team in the last two races.
At the penultimate stage of the Championship in Holland, Stoney won two of the three races, only missing out in the third after a late change to slick tyres. That meant he started the race from the pit lane, 30 seconds behind last place, but he stormed through to claim third place.
This is the second motorsport title Stoney has won, following his 2011 triumph in the Junior Saxmax Championship.
The focus is now on preparing two new cars for the 2014 season, although the long-term goal is to drive in the British Touring Car Championship.
Stoney said: “I have enjoyed every minute of this year’s racing.
“Coastal Racing have done a brilliant job and I’m looking forward to racing with them again in 2014.”
