Inter-club Thai boxing scene hailed by Rich Cadden

FORMER world Thai boxing champion Rich Cadden has hailed the sport’s thriving inter-club scene.
Cadden’s Chokdee gym at York Business Park in Nether Poppleton in York hosted a bill of 34 bouts involving fighters from Nottingham, Hull, Wakefield and Sheffield, as well as the Minster city.
Word is spreading fast about Cadden’s events and he said: “It is the third inter-club competition we have had here and it was a fantastic occasion. There were more than 150 people in the gym. It was an epic success. It is growing and growing.
“We had about 70 Thai boxers from across the region. I did the matching and we had fighters from 25 kilos up to 130 kilo heavyweights.
“I make sure the bouts are designed to nurture talent and not scare people off. It is all about developing confidence.”
Cadden believes the inter-club events are ideal as a bridge between training and sparring, and the competitive arena.
He said: “Our fighters are going from strength to strength. I am so proud of the way they performed. They showed Chokdee in a really good light.
“A lot of new young junior fighters are coming through and this is good for their development. It is halfway between sparring and working on training and skills, and stepping up to an actual fight.
“It’s good to have the pressure of sparring against people you don’t know over three rounds, with correct scoring and an audience there.”
