Hockey: Acomb stave off late Harrogate rally to clinch maximum points
11:16am Tuesday 8th October 2013 in Sport
Harrogate took the lead from a direct penalty corner strike in the 20th minute, but the hosts equalised when David Brown’s ball into the circle touched the ’keeper’s foot en route to the net.
Within two minutes, the Tangerines took the lead after some good play by Ryan Forster.
Shortly before the break Harrogate levelled, but Nick Linfoot’s well-placed strike gave the home side the advantage early in the second period.
Harrogate then forced numerous penalty corners and had a goal disallowed in the final five minutes when a free-hit outside the circle had not travelled the mandatory five metres.
Brown was Acomb’s man of the match.
Acomb men’s II had no game in division five north.
Acomb women’s I were 2-1 winners at Garforth I in Yorkshire League division two.
The home side had the bulk of possession in the first half and took the lead in the 31st minute.
Acomb hit back straight away as Jenna Allinson swept home the equaliser.
In the second half, the Tangerines enjoyed more possession and they forged ahead when Vicky Wrigley crossed for skipper Kerry Woods to score.
Georgi Wood and Rachel Linfoot worked tirelessly in midfield and Caroline Beavers kept Garforth’s centre forward under wraps.
Acomb were unfortunate not to extend their lead after good inter-play between Wendy Watson and her daughter, Emily.
