Late dash for York City loan ace Luke O’Neill
12:32pm Saturday 5th October 2013 in Sport
LUKE O’NEILL was making a 300-mile dash to join up with his new York City team-mates in Torquay last night, writes Dave Flett.
The Burnley right-back has signed a one-month loan deal and is in line to make his debut for the Minstermen at Plainmoor this afternoon if needed.
O’Neill, 22, has found his chances at Turf Moor since moving there from Mansfield limited due to the form of the highly-rated Keiran Trippier.
He made the switch to Lancashire after being a member of the Stags team that was beaten by City during the 2012 Conference play-off semi-finals but has played only two games for the Clarets.
Both were last season with a start in the Capital One Cup followed by a brief 89th-minute substitute outing during the final day of the Championship campaign.
He started his career with Leicester, where he won nine England Under-17 caps and also enjoyed loan spells at Tranmere and Kettering.
On bringing O’Neill to Bootham Crescent, Minstermen chief Nigel Worthington said: “I am delighted that Luke is coming in and he will be available today. He is somebody who I have greatly admired and he will add to our squad.”
