Queen of the Fans Lauren primed for Championship finals day outing

KNIGHTS-mad Lauren Ruddock is to do what her favourite team could not and get onto the pitch at the Championships finals day this weekend, writes Peter Martini.
League sponsor Kingstone Press has named Ruddock as York City Knights “King of the Fans” – well, Queen – as part of a season-long hunt to find the best rugby league supporters below Super League.
Ruddock, from Clifton, was nominated for her unwavering support for the Knights over the last six years. As well as cheering support from the sidelines, she has volunteered on match-days since 2010 – and will do likewise at the upcoming Rugby League World Cup.
Said the 19-year-old Leeds Met student: “I’m happy to have won and proud to represent my club. My dad won a season ticket in 2006, taking me to my first match on Boxing Day and since then I’ve cheered the team on home and away.”
As part of her prize, Ruddock receives a crate of Kingstone Press cider and a family ticket to Championships finals day, where she will be welcomed onto the pitch at half-time to fly the flag for York.
She is now also a contender to be named “Ultimate King (or Queen) of the Fans” at the final along with 22 others from clubs across the two divisions. The winning super fan will receive a year’s supply of cider and an England Rugby League prize.
Gordon Johncox, Kingstone Press Cider managing director, said: “We are thrilled to highlight her admirable dedication to the club. Lauren deserves the title and we hope she enjoys finals day. We were overwhelmed with the response to the competition which has shown the passion and commitment the fans have for their clubs.”
Final day – including the Championship One promotion decider between Oldham and Rochdale and the Championship Grand Final between Sheffield and surprise package Batley – takes place at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.
Tickets cost from £15 for adults, £10 for concessions and can be bought at www.rugbyleaguetickets.co.uk or by phoning the RFL ticket office on 0844 856 1113.
