Surrey v Yorkshire - Day 2, lunch
1:01pm Wednesday 25th September 2013 in Sport
Gary Ballance continued to provide the clearest possible reasons why he had been selected for the Ashes tour as Yorkshire achieved a dominant position on the second morning of their LV= Division One game against Surrey at the Oval.
At lunch the visitors were 434 all out with Ballance dismissed ten minutes before the scheduled break for 148.
Those runs had been scored off 232 balls in 250 minutes with 20 boundaries and one six, the latter smashed off slow left-armer Zafar Ansari the ball before Ballance perished, caught at deep square leg by Gary Wilson.
The left-hander hit ten fours and a six in taking his overnight 72 not out to 148 on the second morning but he was helped by Adil Rashid who made 43 off 54 balls and put on 72 for the seventh wicket with Ballance.
Ansari was the most successful Surrey bowler, taking 4-70 while Matt Dunn and Tom Jewell collected three-wicket hauls. Yorkshire's batsmen were clearly looking to accelerate before lunch and will look to put the home batsmen under pressure this afternoon.
