York City Water Polo Club made a triumphant return by topping the British National Water Polo League with two comprehensive victories in the first round of fixtures.
The matches were held at Walsall Gala Baths, with the first game seeing York against a strong Southampton team.
Both sides defended admirably until York finally opened the Southampton defence. Two goals from man of the match Nick Boaz, and one each from captain Paul Floyd and Danny Rippon left York in control at the end of the first quarter.
York continued to apply pressure, with shot-stopper Andy Morris in fine form at the other end. They led 8-2 by the end of the third quarter and introduced some less experienced players in the final quarter.
York ran out 13-8 winners with the plunder shared by Boaz (7), Chris Burns, Dean Toomey (2), Floyd, Danny and John Rippon.
They continued the following day with a demolition of Dover.
York began the game with high intensity and surged to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, with goals from Eddy Clarkson, Boaz and two from Danny Rippon.
The second quarter was closer but York’s disciplined attacking formations increased their advantage with two goals from Chris Burns and one solo effort from Eddy Clarkson.
York finished 16-2 winners with the other goals coming from Danny and Joe Rippon, Burns (2), Toomey, Boaz (2) and Jonathan Birkby (2).
