Simon Dyson enjoying Italian job on European Tour
THE impressive form that earned him his best finish of the season earlier this week was extended by York’s king of the greens, Simon Dyson, writes Tony Kelly.
The York-born star carded a three-under-par 69 in the first round of the Italian Open yesterday, which yielded him a tie for 13th place going into today’s second round.
That promising start followed on immediately from his last European Tour opening, the KLM Dutch Open, in which he finished joint third to earn a cheque of more than £70,000 and advance no fewer than 19 spots in the world rankings to his current place at 149.
It was, however, definitely a round of two halves for the 35-year-old Dyson at the Golf Club Torino circuit in Turin.
He dropped a shot on his first hole, the par-four tenth, and then after a respite with a birdie on the par-five 12th, he was back in arrears when he bogeyed the par-three 16th to put him one-over at the mid-point of his round.
He never dropped another shot, instead picking up birdies on the first, fifth, sixth and ninth holes to give him a 13-way tie for 13th spot, four shots behind three players on seven-under.
