Simon Dyson finishes KLM Open with a flourish
11:20am Friday 13th September 2013 in Sport
A SUPERB finish to the 18th hole of one of his favourite courses brought a smile to the face of York golf star Simon Dyson.
The world number 168 – bidding to win the KLM Open in Holland for a record-equalling fourth time – was on level par after a horrendous start to the first round at the Kennemer course yesterday.
He had double-bogeyed the par-fourth first hole, but got back to level with birdies on the second and fourth holes.
Then he set upon his trademark run of pars, which proved to be extremely valuable around the turn when he and his fellow competitors were hit by a deluge that provided the worst conditions of the day.
Chances of birdies were just missed on the run-in, but then after sending his drive on the last hole into the rough, Dyson produced a stunning approach shot to within nine inches of the cup.
He duly birdied to finish on one-under-par, tied for 35th place and just five shots adrift of overnight leader, Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez, who led by one shot.
