Darts: David Copley on top as YDP turns Upside Down

THE first York Darts Promotion Upside Down Darts Open at Huntington WMC in York was won by David Copley.
The event, organised in association with York’s Streamline Taxis and Red Dragon Darts, saw two of Yorkshire’s finest go head to head in the final.
Played on a board which had the 20 segment at the bottom and all other numbers in opposite positions, Thurnscoe’s Copley despatched legs of 18, 17 and 18 darts, plus a 14-dart leg decider, to defeat Brian Dawson (18, 116 finish for 18 and 17) 4-3 in the final.
Copley was on fire from his first match as he hit three 180s during legs of 16, 17, 16, 18, 16 and 13 darts en route to the semi-final, where he beat Cawood’s Johnathan Crossland 4-1 with legs of 15, 17 and 14 darts.
Dawson’s journey to the final included a 101 finish for 18, plus 20, 17, 14 and 15-dart legs before taking out York’s Trevor Day in the other semi-final.
Other legs of note came from Crossland (18, 20, 17, 21), Richie Corner (16, 16), Paul Train (16), Paul Saville (20), Day (18), Stuart Limbert (20, 21) and Colin Hendry, who hit a 180 in a 13-dart leg.
Further 180s were scored by Train (2) and Quentin McMaster, while there was a 171 from Vinnie Gothard and a 174 by Paul Bainbridge.
The blind pairs was won by Hendry and Neil Hart, who beat Gothard and Corner 2-1 in the final. Beaten semi-finalists were Phil Good and Trevor Day, plus and Alex Grand and Grant Gothard.
The YDP’s next event is the first of eight qualifying stages for the YDP Masters at the Greyhound in Bridlington on Saturday, September 14.
Entry is £5, with £200 being paid out at the qualifying stage. Registration closes at 12.30pm for a 1pm start.
All the quarter-finalists qualify for the Grand Finals in York in January. The overall winner will receive £1,000.
Tickets for the YDP Pro-am Grand Finals, which showcases eight top BDO professionals at Huntington WMC on Wednesday, October 9, will be on sale at this event, priced at £7.50.
