Selby RUFC sign Kiwi trio
SELBY RUFC have drafted in a trio of Kiwis as they look to start their season with a bang at Moortown in the first round of the Yorkshire Shield.
Tom Cobley, and brothers Rihi and Teihana Brown, have arrived from Wairarapa Bush League side East Coast to boost the Sandhill Lane squad as they look to build on last year’s Yorkshire Two and RFU Senior Vase successes.
Karim Brown, a revelation for the double winners last term, has returned to the southern hemisphere, however, as his visa has run out.
Selby came through a tough pre-season clash with Malton & Norton last weekend, held over four 20-minute quarters, and head coach Richard Nicholson says his side are now itching to get back into competitive action.
“We are probably one of a few clubs that take the Shield seriously,” he said.
“We are very much planning to give it our full effort and see how far we can go.
“It is something we have spoken about.
“We have had quite a long pre-season – both from a coaching point of view and with the players – so we are now quite keen to get on and get stuck into some games.
“It’s an exciting time. I am pleased with the players. They have worked hard over the summer and it’s all a matter now of putting it into practice.”
Pocklington take on National League Three North side Bradford & Bingley in a plum preliminary round Yorkshire Cup tie (3pm).
The visitors come to Percy Road under the direction of former rugby league and rugby union international legend Henry Paul.
Pock’s youngsters are looking forward to testing themselves against higher league opposition before the league season gets under way next week.
They will be led by new skipper Ben Rees.
York have a bye in the Yorkshire Shield, while Malton & Norton are in action at Driffield in the preliminary round of the Yorkshire Cup.
York RI, meanwhile, visit Thirsk in the preliminary round of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy.
