THE York Amateur Bowling Association season reached a thrillig climax on finals day at West Park.
The rink of John Parsons, Mike Wadsworth, Simon Ewing and Gary Stockton got off to a slow start in the fours final, slipping 11-1 adrift of Geoff Symons’ rink, which also included Ray Lyall, Ray Calpin and Mal Thompson.
A spirited fightback saw them level the game at 11-11 after 11 ends and, although Symons’ men eased away again to 17-11, Stockton’s rink fought back to lead 20-19 entering the final end.
Stockton then produced a winning wood to seal a 21-19 success.
Consolation was to follow in the triples final, where Calpin, Symons and Thompson edged out Eddie Howcroft, Tony Longfield and Trevor Quainton.
After 14 of the 18 ends, Calpin’s men looked to be easing to the win but Quainton’s team picked up eight shots in three ends to tie the game at 17-17 with one end to play.
This time the nerve of the Dringhouses bowlers held firm and a single saw them take the trophy.
In the pairs final, Graham Bell and Kirk Jackson were locked at 6-6 after seven ends against Harry Marshall and John Cooper.
Some excellent bowling by Jackson enabled his pair to ease away to a 22-15 triumph.
The singles final between Kevin Liddell and Colin King looked like being a one-sided affair early on, with Liddell storming into a 10-1 lead.
Liddell pulled away to lead 20-8 before King mounted a late surge to reduce the gap to 20-16, before an excellent wood from Liddell saw him over the line.
The consolation singles final followed a similar pattern as Paul Murray raced to an early 11-3 advantage against Simon Gill.
Murray led 17-6 and 20-11, but Gill pulled back to 20-16 before Murray secured the win at the next end to emerge a 21-16 winner.
In the final throes of the league season, Dringhouses won division two and Wigginton took the division three crown in their first season in the league.
