NO fewer than five division two sides exited round one of the York Minster Engineering League Junior Cup at the hands of lower league opposition.
Fellow Minster League new boys, South Milford, defeated Thorpe United 2-1, and Barmby Moor, also of division two, lost 2-0 at home to Melbourne.
The third-tier graveyard was completed by Strensall, who went out to a last-minute penalty against Sporting Knavesmire, while Rawcliffe were beaten on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate at Stamford Bridge.
One team that did survive the division two cull were cup holders Cliffe.
They breezed past LNER Builders 6-0 with the tally led by a hat-trick from Chris Harkin followed by efforts from Shane Cawkill, Kevin Taylor (penalty) and Chris Jackson.
Haxby United beat Selby Olympia 3-1, with goals from club stalwarts Dale Waddington and Matthew Wash, inset, and former Rowntree player, Paul Scaife. There were goals galore at Wilberfoss where the hosts defeated Jorvik Blades 7-3. The ’Foss scorers were Tom Mercer (2), Adam Robertson (2), Ross Etherington, Karl Laverick and Matt Holme.
Nine goals were seen at Huby, with eight coming in the second half. Unfortunately for the home support, there was only one goal from Joe Broughton to cheer. Steve Gagen led Rufforth’s eight-goal romp by notching four. The other goals were notched by Tom Adie (2), Daniel Witcombe and Alex Nockels.
Penalties were needed to settle the tie between Civil Service and Selby Town.
Selby led 1-0 at the interval, but Chris Smith replied for Civil Service to take the match to spot-kicks, where Town triumphed 4-2.
Likewise, Kirkbymoorside won 7-6 on penalties, after a 2-2 full time scoreline at Crayke.
Dan Smith and Matty Dixon weighed in with Crayke’s goals, but it will be league newcomers Kirkbymoorside who will face Haxby United in the second round.
George Trifan, Mike Taylor, Rich Proctor and Neil Yeowart scored for F1 Racing in the 4-2 ousting of Ouseburn.
Huntington beat Bishop Wilton by the same scoreline, with the latter’s strikes coming from Andrew Heathcote and Alex Brown.
Fulford United brushed aside Moor Lane 5-1 to set up a round two tie at Wilberfoss. Ash Hope, Jamie Husband, Finn McCusker and Danny Penrose provided the finishes, along with a Moor Lane own goal. Andrew Kenyon hit Moor Lane’s reply.
Heslington scored the only goal of the game against hosts Acorn and will now travel to F1 Racing in the next round.
