Bowls: Ladies League winners’ flourish
York Indoor Bowls Club completed their Yorkshire Ladies League season in style after beating Selby 81-50 in their final match.
Having already won the championship, they then won three rinks and drew one, picking up a further nine points and extending the gap between first and second place to 15 points. They have dropped only five points all season.
In Selby, Melanie Brooke’s team got off to a good start leading Sue Williamson’s team 7-0 before the home side got on the board with a single. It was a short-lived reply as the York side won ten of the following 12 ends to take the score to 26-3. They finally won 29-5.
The side led by Helen Wood picked up a three in the first end of their game against Cynthia Birkenshaw’s team which proved the highest score on an end during the game in which 16 singles were scored before the York side triumphed 14-13.
At home, Carol Instone’s rink started soundly against Jane Simpson’s team leading 14-6 after ten ends.
But by the 16th, Simpson had pulled the score back to 16-15 only to drop a four on the next end and lose two more in the run-in to go lose 23-17.
Sheila Turpin’s team were involved in a tight game but they saw a 13-9 advantage whittled down to just one shot by Carol Sarvant’s side, who then sneaked a late single for a 15-15 share-all.
New Earswick IBC were looking for a big win against Redcar in section ‘B’ to gain promotion, but it wasn’t to be as they lost 101-58 with eight points to Redcar gaining the title and two points for New Earswick cementing third place.
