Worthington: Richard Cresswell adds winning mentality

Richard Cresswell in action for Sheffield United Richard Cresswell in action for Sheffield United

Updated: RICHARD Cresswell will bring a much-needed “winning mentality” on his return to Bootham Crescent according to York City manager Nigel Worthington.

The 35-year-old striker has been given permission to sign for the Minstermen on a month’s loan from Sheffield United by Worthington’s former team-mate Danny Wilson, who is now in charge of the Blades.

Worthington last night declined to comment on the possibility of Jonathan Greening also returning on loan from Nottingham Forest, choosing not to confirm or deny speculation linking the club with the ex-Manchester United midfielder.

Cresswell was a member of the United team that reached the League One play-off final last season and played the first 85 minutes at Wembley before Huddersfield clinched a penalty shoot-out win.

He has also been involved in the Bramall Lane club’s promotion push this term and, since leaving City in 1999, has helped Stoke reach the Premier League and been involved with Championship play-off campaigns at Preston and Leeds.

The Bridlington-born forward, therefore, has grown accustomed to collecting three points on a regular basis and Worthington reckons that could prove crucial as his team, without a win in 14 matches, look to preserve their Football League status.

Worthington, who played alongside Wilson for club and country when the pair represented Sheffield Wednesday and Northern Ireland, said: “Richard started his career with York and still lives in the city.

“He knows what is happening here and has a feeling for the club. He will bring a wealth of experience of winning matches and that’s what we need.

“He’s also played at the highest level and I am absolutely delighted to get a player of his calibre and experience. His presence in the dressing room should get the best out of the other players as well.”

Cresswell left City to join Sheffield Wednesday back in March 1999 in a £950,000 deal.

He scored 19 goals during that final season and, without him, the Minstermen were subsequently relegated from League One.

The 6ft striker also earned England under-21 honours as a City player and now has 140 goals and 639 career appearances to his name, as well as moves totalling £3.35 million in transfer fees, including a seven-figure switch from Preston to Leeds in 2005.

He had three different spells in the Premier League with Wednesday, Leicester and Stoke but found the net hard to find in the top flight, netting only twice in 66 outings.

Cresswell last hit the target during his first game this term – a 5-3 home win for the Blades against Bournemouth – but 16 of his subsequent 19 appearances have come from the bench.

He last featured as a substitute against Leyton Orient three weeks ago and has been combining his playing responsibilities with coaching the club’s development squad.

But Worthington still believes Cresswell can improve fortunes in front of goal for shot-shy City, who have failed to make the scoresheet in six of their last nine fixtures.

The City boss said: “Part of the reason he has been brought in is to get goals and, hopefully, he will score them if we help him by getting the ball to him from wide areas and the middle of the park.”

Cresswell’s addition brings City’s loan quota to seven with only five permitted to play at any one time.

As a consequence, Alex Rodman was left out of the squad for Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Port Vale altogether but it is unlikely that any of the seven will leave Bootham Crescent, as they would not be eligible to play for their parent clubs between now and the end of the season and the Minstermen would also be obliged to continue paying their wages.

Worthington would still, however, consider bringing in other temporary signings before tomorrow’s transfer deadline if he feels they would strengthen the squad.

He said: “We are still looking around. That’s ongoing but anybody coming in would have to improve what we already have.”

Worthington is also hoping defensive duo Lanre Oyebanjo and David McGurk will be fit enough to travel to Torquay for the weekend’s vital Plainmoor clash.

The City chief added that, with more than 300 appearances for the Minstermen, the long-serving McGurk’s affinity with the club makes him an attractive proposition for selection but also stressed there are other considerations to be taken into account following the 30-year-old centre-back’s two-month absence due to hamstring and calf problems.

Worthington said: “We are getting to the situation where you look to experience but it’s also got to be about being up to scratch fitness-wise and he has been out for a few weeks.”

Please let this be the boost we need. Well done to NW, who I admit I have been very critical of - this seems like a great catch. Cresswell may be old now (for a striker), but he still seems to care about the club and I'm sure he'll do everything he can.

Surely the only concern would be fitness but relative to everyone else he could be considered fresh and rested.

He will be committed, physical and knows where the net is, surely it can't be anything other than a good signing?

Messi? "A player from the past who could do the business for us now is Cresswell. He was linked with a move earlier the season and commented at the time that he was flattered to be mentioned. He's not played for Sheffield Utd regularly. He lives in York, clearly still has affinity for club, strong and brave.I am guessing he would love to end his career where it started and give something back to this great club."

Mills opted not to include a sub keeper for tactical reasons. Your use of the word "failed" implies he was in some way at fault for not doing so. Many managers choose not to routinely include a sub 'keeper. Whether they should or not is a different debate. Interesting news about Cressie and, possibly, Greening.

Always a risky decision for me. What happens if your keeper gets injured or sent off. You can end up getting stuffed or as with Norwich, send on a "proper" keeper and still have a chance of a result.

Given recent performances we're exactly where we deserve to be! But all is not lost, 7 games to go. We need 12 points minimum. Saturday is the most important game since Wembley. If we play hoofball we'll get NOTHING!!!

sixtyfourfive says...
10:15pm Tue 19 Mar 13

Assumption so far has been that 50 points should make for safety - looking at the table after tonight's results makes me wonder if even that will suffice. 52 might be nearer the mark. Very sadly I cannot see where another 11 points will come from and the Worthington coming has I believe taken us backwards.

I wonder if the impact of actually seeing the league table with City in a relegation spot will effect the players. If it was me I would be furious that we'd let the greatest season at Bootham Crescent be followed up by a gutless campaign of relegation. Surely they've got some pride in themselves to give the fans a feeling that their team is trying to win games. I fear the worst though, they do look a bunch of beaten soldiers.

C'mon lads! Do it for yourselves!

Cresswell. Great news, may be old, but vastly experienced, and more imprtantly, knows where the goal is, may not be match fit, but will certainly make the oposition think a bit more of a possible goal threat, as no disrespect to the other forwards, opposition defences, currently expect a pretty easy afternoon against us, as we dont pose any threat , attacking wise.
If we could as rumoured sign Jonathan Greening as well as crezzy, I am sure the club would be lifted, and the buzz would surely be back.
BUT, it wouldnt be down to the new signings, all the lads must pull together, we are tantalisingly close to getting out of trouble, but indeed perilously close to relegation. We have no easy games, as Im sure the teams around us will have fire in their bellies, we need to be , big, and strong, and at least be commited in the cause to maintain our league status.
It saddens me to think we could be conference bound, after such a promising start.
If nothing else boys lets see, passion, commitment, and a real hunger on Saturday at Torquay, as I am sure1 win will set us on the recovery road, and instill confidence, for some crunch games to come.

Great to see the enthusiasm over the signing of Cresswell (and the Richard jokes are great - credit to Old Head for the first one) but...
... is he the solution? He has scored at around one goal every five games in his career, including his time with York. He was dead on his one in five ratio the season before this with 10 goals but it is very worrying that he has only played once this season. How many games to get back to match fitness?
Maybe he'll knock one in early on and inspire and maybe even set up those around him but don't be expecting hat-tricks.
There again Francis Jeffers scored twice last night for Accrington and he has a similar record. He's only 32 though!
Good luck to Richard and welcome back but he'll have to play out of his skin to be a big influence.

We can't rely on other results going our way we have to win 3 of the last 7 games to have any chance. Unbelievable set of results last night and everything going against us at the moment. Saturday's game is so important, a draw won't be good enough, must win it so the manager needs to pick the 11 players who are prepared to go through the pain barrier.

If you look at all the other clubs involved in this mess, especially Accrington and Torquay, their fans are being encouraged to rally round them by the local press and club websites. I believe Torquay are encouraging fans by offering free tickets in their local press when an adult purchases one for Saturday's game. Accrington had a bigger than normal crowd in last night due to cut price admission (£5). Come on Press, get together with the club to sort something for the remaining Home games. Everyone should stick together to get us out of this mess.

I don't think he is saying the fans are to blame ... he is saying that we need supporters not hecklers.

I am a season ticket holder & stood in two different areas of the Longhurst stand on Saturday ... & was appalled by the negativity of some fans ... there were a group of 5 behind me who chastised every City player every time they either:

1) crossed a ball that didn't land on a City head.
2) Didn't get their head on a City cross
3) played a pass which went awry
4) lost posession
5) kicked the ball out for a throw in

etc etc etc ....

It really was embarrassing, they did not utter one single word of support from minute one, simply negative moaning !

So ... whilst I don't think the original poster meant the fans are to blame .... they certainly are not helping !!

Of course this is probably just a minority of fans who are doing this ... but I think if anyone hears this sort of 'support' from anyone around them in these final games they should be 'advised' as to a more productive way of supporting their team ... Negativity is not what we need right now !

Looking at form and fixtures it is quite likely that the following could prevail, especially if Torquay, Plymouth and Accrington were to beat us.

Aldershot 8pts
to play Port Vale, Rochdale, Oxford, Wycombe, Southend, Dagenham, Rochdale

Barnet 9 pts
to play Cheltenham, Dagenham, Wimbledon, Chesterfield, Torquay, Wycombe, Northampton

Torquay 9pts
Us,Northampton, Bradford, Gillingham,Barnet, Morecambe, Bristol R

Accrington 10pts
Gillingham, Wycombe,Burton, Us, Morecambe, Bristol R, Oxford

Wimbledon 10pts
Fleetwood, Gillingham, Exeter, Bristol R, Barnet, Rotherham, Morecambe

Plymouth 10pts
Chesterfield, Exeter, Us, Cheltenham, Burton, Rotherham, Rochdale

dos'ent want the Fat Lady singing, I am sure the players will pull out all the stops to keep the club in Div 2, if i was a player out of contract at the end of the season,i would'nt want on my CV.

It was more a general comment on the number of posts that seem to push the blame for what's happened either partly of fully on the fans when I think there is little evidence to suggest its the case. You will get a section of fans heckling at every club, see it up here in Scotland just the same. We have had posters stating the fans got Mills sacked as though there had been some Blackburn type situation.

Supahooper more like poopascooper with the drivel Luton fans come out with, beaten so many times by the Minster men, I'm surprised they would actually want to play us again as that's 6 points they could write off! 30,000 at Wembley to see the York trounce them, but at least Luton had a nice little day out to watch a better team.

Right... 24 hours since last nights results. Time for optimism even if its misguided it will make me feel better at the least! Firstly, we can not play as badly as we did on Saturday. We will not play teams as good as PV were on their day. We won't be facing a strike force as potent as Pope and Hughes again this season. Come Saturday NW will have had three weeks to get his system and formation bedded in and we have a striker who can lead the line, score goals and as he actually supports the club will want to win for all the right reasons. Last Saturdays performance reminded me of the game we lost at home to Macclesfield when we went down and that **** Parkin was kissing his badge after he scored. However, I for one have faith that we are more likely to turn it around this season than then. We have a far better squad with a wise footballing pro at the helm who can and I believe will start coaxing better performances from our team. Finally I'd rather be in our position than Luton's at the moment thats for sure! COYR

Just out of interest have Luton climbed up to midtable yet mate ? You seem to be getting worse year on year, any truth the club is in real financial difficulty and could go under if you fail to gain promotion next season ?
Luton in financial difficulty? Sure you're not confusing us with yourselves? I've heard you're going part-time next season when you're back in the BSP. Why would we be in financial difficulty when we've just made 500K in the FA Cup and get 6,000+ crowds at home?
SupaHooper Luton you only get such high crowds at Luton due to your Scandinavian right wing visitors . Your real tough fans don't even come from Luton . Luton town fans are just fat folk in stupid hats - ha ha !

Luton the home of the English Defence League - How ironic when you've let so many goals in against poor Blue Square teams this season !!

5 to 6000 numptys turning up to see a mediocre Sunday league team....you want your heads testing! No wonder when you see a proper team turn up you start jumping up and down, chuck stuff, like little kids wishing they had something better. If the Blue Square had any backbone you guys would be playing in the Isle of Wight under 11s league.....

Keep sprouting your tripe ladies, it just shows that you all know that you're days in League 2 are numbered. You're just a small club with not many fans and you've bitten off more than you can chew. I'll be back in a month to celebrate your demise. So long tards!

Oh have we hurt you feelings. I know its hard knowing Luton will never play a football league game again. Come back in a month if we stay up and join the big boys in the football league.
