Hockey: Acomb Ladies tame Canalside Terriers to triumph

Acomb Hockey Club ladies secured third place in Yorkshire division three after a weekend double.

Despite going a goal down to Canalside Terriers, the Tangerines rallied to win 2-1 thanks to a brace of goals by Jenna Allinson late in the first half.

The second half was a scrappy affair with chances going begging but there was no further score as the hosts held out.

The win boosted promotion hopes ahead of the derby duel against second-placed City of York III at Energise 24 hours later.

The visitors put Acomb under the cosh for much of the first half and took the lead through Sarah Winteron.

Acomb improved after half-time, flankers Wendy and Emily Watson working hard and getting in telling crosses, while Allinson and Kerry Woods had some excellent forward runs.

But as the weather worsened with snow falling, York’s one strike sealed promotion for them while Acomb will now have to wait to see if they go up via a potential league restructure.
