Yorkshire Over-55s League second division champions New Earswick ended their season with a 92-61 clean sweep over York ‘B’, who had won four games on the trot.

The derby exchange was as good as over after ten ends with the aggregate score standing at 51-22 to New Earswick’s rinks at Thanet Road.

Ralph Tiplady’s rink was 20-4 up against Alan May’s team and Barry Harrison’s 14-1 against Bob Blackburn’s side.

At Huntington Road, the spats were much closer. Ken Robinson led Barry Johnson’s team 8-7 and Paul Dawson’s team had a 10-9 advantage against Alan Clapham’s.

But the game changed as New Earswick pulled away at home with Dawson’s side going on to win 25-14 and Johnson’s having the best of the run-in to go from 12-11 ahead with three to play to win 17-14.

The York home rinks rallied to respectability.

Bob Blackburn’s team dropped just one shot in the last eight ends to only lose 20-14, while that of Alan May went from 26-11 to 26-19 before dropping a four on the last end.

New Earswick, first division champions Featherstone, runners-up York ‘A’ and third-placed North Cave White will now compete for the Challenge Cup on Thursday, March 28.
