Snooker League title race hotting up

THE race for the York Conservative Clubs’ Carlsberg UK Snooker League title is going down to the wire.

Acomb ‘A’ lead the way with 55 points but only have two matches left to play, while the chasing pack of Heworth ‘A’ (52 points), Fulford ‘B’ (51 points) and Heworth ‘B’ (48 points) each have a game in hand.

Acomb ‘A’ beat Fulford ‘A’ 4-3 in a rearranged game before losing 5-2 to the same opponents.

In the first game, Nick Marchant, Keith Thornhill and Richard Lillie put Acomb 3-0 up, but Simon England (21 break) stopped the run.

Paul Holmes (22 clearance) secured the win, but Tim Lister and Glen Mountain (28 break) made it 4-3.

Fulford ‘A’s 5-2 victory included wins by Simon England, Lister (22, 24 breaks) Sam Wass, Tom Wilson and Mountain. Holmes and Phil Carlton (24 break) replied.

Heworth ‘A’ were beaten 4-3 by Fulford ‘B’ in a rearranged match.

James Kilmartin, Nick Dyson and Jason Milner won for Heworth against replies by Arthur Pegden and Bob Smith. Jim Rollinson and Andy Ogley won the match.

Heworth ‘A’ responded in the second match and beat Fulford ‘B’ 5-2 with wins by Dyson, Kilmartin, Gary Douglas, Neil Wood and Mark Winskill. Rollinson and Nigel Smith won for Fulford.

Heworth ‘B’ went 3-1 ahead of Bootham ‘B’ through Darren Colledge, Mark Calpin and Brian Birch. Paul Scorfield (38 break) and Adam Scorfield levelled, but Chris Thompson sealed a 4-3 win for Heworth 4-3.

Bootham ‘A’s woe continued as Malton ‘A’ secured a 5-2 victory.

Malton went 2-1 ahead through Simon Weatherill (39 break) and Andrew Sherry (black ball win), against a reply by Rob Barron.

Mark Darley levelled, but Phil Hart, Lee Taylor (76 break) and Roger Ward (24 break) made it 5-2.

Meanwhile, Bootham regained the Ted Plant Cup after beating Acomb 4-0 in the final at Bootham.

Bootham’s Peter Jackson and Andrew Whin beat Acomb’s Phil Bushell and Jim Barker 65-40 in the opener.

In the second frame, Acomb’s Jeff Keen and Nicos Kadis lost 60-55 to Ken Clifford and Norman Shipley.

In the third, Andy Wade made a 21 break but he and Ken Dalby lost 59-52 to Wayne Glaister and Tony Cox.

Bootham’s Steve Cain and Matt Dawson were in total control in the fourth frame, winning 47-38.

The cup and trophies were presented by York Faber Shield committee chairman Colin Robinson on behalf of sponsor Bob Plant.
