York City work on set-pieces

Having bagged a brace of goals, albeit in vain at the weekend, defensive sentinel Chris Smith is hoping he can claim a couple more decisive goals before the end of the campaign, as the team work on their threat from set-pieces.

“We’ve not been scoring enough from set-pieces and, as a centre-half, I must shoulder some of the blame for that because we get a few corners,” admitted Smith.

“We worked on them in training last week and looked dangerous on Saturday (at Wimbledon).

“The second goal was a great delivery from John McGrath but Rochdale will have had us watched if they have anything about them, so we might need to do something different against them.

“The gaffer and (assistant manager) Fred (Barber) have a few set-pieces that they want us to try though.

“I had only scored one goal all season before Saturday and I always try to beat my previous season’s tally, which was four, so five is my target.”
