Selby Warriors stay in hunt after Stainland Stags triumph

Selby Warriors ARLC turned in their best performance of the season to edge Stainland Stags 16-14 and retain promotion hopes in division three of the Pennine League.

Selby’s forwards tore into the visitors, prop Mark Hanson taking the man of the match, while John Broadhurst and Scott Birch were also superb.

The forwards set up the first try for captain Wayne Fennell and he quickly got his second, Jimmy Hanson goaling.

Interchange forwards Matthew Emmett, Kurt Cookson and Kelvin Robinson, on his first-team debut, kept up the pressure.

Stainland scored a try to trail 10-4 at half-time and they equalised after the break. However, scrum-half Danny Simpson sent Broadhurst diving over, Hanson goaling.

The visitors again replied but missed the kick and the Warriors held out in a nervy last ten minutes.

Selby Warriors ‘A’ team’s division seven game at Queensbury ‘B’ was postponed – the league having it down as a 30-0 home win for conceding the match.

New Earswick All Blacks suffered their tenth defeat of the Pennine League championship season as they lost 38-0 to leaders Keighley.

The All Blacks man of the match was Alan Davidson, who was backed up well by Chris Spain and the returning Michael Horton.

York Acorn ‘A’ were 12-6 winners at Milford Marlins ‘A’ in the Yorkshire Men’s League cup.
