Hockey: York women’s I denied trio of wins by late leveller

THREE wins on the spin were denied at the very last for City of York Hockey Club women’s I.

Away to Longridge in the premier division of the North League, York rallied from 2-0 down to lead 3-2, only to then be denied by a late leveller in the dying seconds.

Barely had York found their feet when they were fighting to counter a 2-0 deficit.

A Kirsty Rossington effort was disallowed before hope was rekindled when Ali Butler hit the target.

In the second half, York’s renewed confidence instigated more pressure from which Butler sped into a gap between the ’keeper and the near post from a tight angle to drive the ball into the net for an equaliser.

Goalkeeper Dawn Hopkins made several key saves and then York took the lead for the first time when player-of-the-match Katie Birch and Laura Horne linked up well for the latter to score.

But with the points almost stashed away, Longridge stole possession and broke clear to snatch an equaliser seconds before the final whistle.
