Hockey: Acomb men's I win 4-0 at Bradford
10:36am Tuesday 5th March 2013 in Sport
SAFETY was secured in style by Acomb Hockey Club men’s firsts after trouncing Yorkshire League division four hosts Bradford University 4-0.
The home side had plenty of pace and moved the ball well until they arrived at the Tangerines’ defence where Pete Hilton, later named man-of-the-match, Dave Bell and Dave Brown kept them at bay.
Acomb opened the scoring from a penalty corner routine in which Matt Dickenson’s flick rebounded off a defender’s stick for Carl Brindley to net his first goal for the club.
With a minute to go to half-time, Nick Linfoot’s cross was neatly deflected in by Harry Ellis.
Acomb’s midfield strength led by David Richardson thwarted all attempts by the university, while goalkeeper Craig Brown was defiant.
It wasn’t too long before Ellis doubled his tally by a neat push into the corner. Then, with ten minutes remaining, Brindley swept home from inches after the ball rebounded off a post.
While Acomb men’s II had ample possession, they could not progress against a solid Halifax side and had to settle for a point in a 1-1 division six north draw. Stuart Rushworth scored for the Tangerines.
