Hockey: Halifax break Acomb ladies record run

A RESILIENT run of 15 games unbeaten ended for Acomb HC ladies after an eventful weekend.

Some 24 hours after being awarded a walkover against Cleckheaton, the Acomb ranks entertained Halifax II at Energise in a clash between the Yorkshire League division three leaders and the third-placed hosts.

Acomb toiled in the early exchanges, but kept the table-toppers in check following numerous penalty corners with Caroline Beavers and Jane Elsworth prominent.

However, with five minutes to go before the half-time break a Halifax raider shot from a narrow angle and the ball slipped under goalkeeper Gemma Hall.

The second half was played in much the same format with Halifax pressing hard but failing to net.

The Tangerines, meanwhile, relied on the attacking prowess of skipper Kerry Woods, left, and Jenna Allinson, while Georgi Wood ran her heart out in midfield.

The long run over, promotion-chasing Acomb now need to win their next four fixtures and hope City of York drop points against Halifax on Saturday.
