York City manager Nigel Worthington sets 50-point target for League Two survival
11:50am Tuesday 5th March 2013 in Sport
By Dave Flett, Sports reporter
Nigel Worthington
YORK City’s new boss Nigel Worthington is looking to make the same immediate impact at Bootham Crescent as he managed when saving Leicester from relegation in the Championship.
As revealed by The Press yesterday, Worthington, pictured above, has taken charge of the Minstermen following the dismissal of his predecessor Gary Mills at the weekend.
And his first target is to reach the 50-point safety mark – the club currently have 40 – that would preserve the club’s Football League status as soon as possible.
Worthington was assigned a similar task back in 2007 but only had five matches to keep the Foxes up following a run of eight games without a win.
Crucial victories at Preston and Barnsley subsequently ensured the drop was avoided and, with City currently lying four points above League Two’s bottom two places, he will be working on his inherited players’ mindsets to quickly end a sequence of 11 fixtures since the club’s last triumph.
In his first press conference as City chief, the former Norwich and Northern Ireland manager said: “The brief at Leicester was to come in and keep them in the Championship. I completed that job and it only takes a look at the table to see what position we are in now.
“I have to make an immediate impact because games are running out but there are ample points available to make sure we are in League Two next season. I have to get the mindset of the players right and, having trained with them now, I was impressed with a lot of the football.
“We probably need a more ruthless streak to win games and we’ve got to get into a healthy position, reach 50 points as soon as possible, maintain the club’s League Two status and then look forward.”
Worthington, employed under a similar rolling contract to Mills, has turned down previous chances to return to the game following the end of his reign as Northern Ireland manager in October 2011.
It is believed he was approached to take over at troubled League One outfit Coventry City but found the Minstermen a more attractive proposition due to their financial clean bill of health.
The former Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds left-back added: “I’ve had a few offers from clubs in higher divisions during the last 12 months but they did not feel right for me. I spoke to the chairman here at great length though on Sunday and there is a lot of common ground in our thoughts about how a football club should be run.
“I felt very comfortable with how realistic he is about how he wants the club to make steady and gradual progress. He doesn’t want to put the club in jeopardy and, for me, that’s the right way.
“I also know the history of the club and that it has been through some tough times over the last ten years. To fight back from where it has been was fantastic and now a lot of work has got to be done to move it forward again.”
Worthington, 51, admitted he now felt rejuvenated following a “nice rest” from the game that has given him a living since his playing debut for Notts County in 1981.
“I had been at the top end of the game for more than 30 years as a player and manager without a break,” he said. “I felt it was the right moment to have a bit of time out and I have enjoyed catching up with the family but I am ready to go again.”
Following four-and-a-half years as an international coach, Worthington is now looking forward to working at club level again but stressed the principles of management remain the same in both.
“Being an international manager was a fantastic experience,” he confessed. “I thoroughly enjoyed taking on some of the best coaches in the world but you only get to work with the players once every six weeks.
“It’s going to be great to get out into the fresh air with the lads every day again but, otherwise, there is not too much difference because you implement the same things that work for you at international level as you do at club level.”
Due to his work this season as a television and radio summariser, he has witnessed far more Premier League games than he has lower-tier fixtures.
He is also only familiar with a handful of City’s players but sees neither of those factors as an important barrier.
He said: “I know what this level is all about, what the challenge is and I am looking forward to it.
“In terms of the players here, I know of Michael Ingham, Paddy McLaughlin and Chris Doig, and I also played with young Matty Blair’s father Andy.
“Football’s a wonderful game for bringing people together and I expect to be up to speed with them all within a couple of days.”
Current City attacker Ashley Chambers was actually a 17-year-old hopeful on the books at Leicester during Worthington’s brief stint in charge there but the new Bootham Crescent boss had little chance to run the rule over him back then, explaining: “I only had five weeks there.”

Anything but a win really is a failure.
Having a chat with McGill could mean a whole multitude of things. He told us we were staying at BC once over.

I still think we won't. GM would have kept us up. So NW has to do more than that. He has to have us knocking on the door of the Championship. But will he stay long enough? I hope so.
I'd have him til end of season then reinstate Mills. Still think it's crazy he's gone. And yes i know we should be looking forward now but i'd sooner have Mills than anyone else. My opinion.

Worthington, 51, was confirmed on Monday as successor to Gary Mills, who was sacked after Saturday's home defeat to Bradford, and has appointed former Bury goalkeeper coach Barber and York's youth-team boss Torpey to work alongside him.
"Fred has been with me since Blackpool," said Worthington. "When he was at Bolton he used to come in for a couple of afternoons a week and take the keepers.
"Then I had Fred with me for four and a half years at Northern Ireland. He brings fantastic knowledge and experience to that position and is somebody that works the keepers extremely hard, which I like.
"If you look at (Jussi) Jaaskelainen, ex-Bolton now at West Ham, Fred had a huge part to play in the achievements he's made, so there's a lot of quality there and a lot of football experience, which is good to have alongside you.
"And Steve has been at the club for a number of years.
"He's got local knowledge and knows the players inside out and it was right that we moved him up alongside us.
"It's good experience for him as well and gives him the opportunity of seeing what it's like at the top end. He's a good lad, I've been very impressed with what I've seen so far."
Barber has taken up his new role with Worthington after leaving the Shakers, who he joined at the start of this season.

I often wonder if York City fans posting here really know anything at all about football! After years of failure -punctuated by actually getting back in the league - City now have a manager with the required experience to take the club further. Anyone who thinks Mills should have continued probably shouldn't make any comments. Really!

There really is no sentiment in football. Mills did good last season, failed this season. If York had been second in the league this season with 10 games to go and a Championship Club had come in for him, do you really think Gary would have thought to himself, hang on, went to Wembley twice with York, I'd better stay for the fans...no chance, he'd have gone and I wouldn't have blamed him. It's all about the next level, we now have a Boss at the helm who has the credentials to pull this off and the right contacts to pull in some half decent players. Gary Clappers, get over yourselves or go follow him.
Mills brought the goods times we had long waited for, However he was also dragging us down with his one formation.
The formation itself isnt a problem but it is when the players he stood by were unable to use it too effect time and time again .Instead of changing the formation to suit the players capabilites ,admitting he was wrong and backing down off his high horse he just kept rolling the dice with his team selections and played players out of position and out of their comfort zone.
He got away with it last season where mistakes were not punished however this season mistakes lead to goals in our net.
So mills will go down as the man who guided us to promotion back into the football league but its clear he simply could not take us any further and was simply out of his depth.
Nobody more than me would have loved Gary to have taken us further and at least be competitive in the top 10 places. But no man is bigger than our club and it was time to hand over the reins.
Thanks for the good times while they lasted , But like many of Gary's signings its time for you to move on this time.

This already sounds very promising from NW. A full recall of all players out on loan, a back-up keeper to keep MI on his toes, and a determination to keep playing proper football but "in the right areas." Quite a telling remark that. I for one am excited about the last ten games now. I have been to all home matches bar one, and since New Year have walked down to BC with trepidation and hope running as fast downhill as the team's slide down L2. In my many debates with fellow supporters (post-match crying into beer), I have consistently said that GM had to go, and should have gone sooner. It was obvious that he had run out of ideas and was stubborn enough to think that he could turn things around... that would have been disastrous to the club, the fans and the board. The FL is an unforgiving place, we know this from experience. So, like others who have posted already, well done to the McGills for moving swiftly in the end to try and rescue our season with a PROVEN manager. Also, I think the McGills are to be congratulated on giving GM every chance to redeem himself (results at Oxford and Rotherham just eluding him), but for me the writing was on the wall long before those two games. GM will have time to reflect on where he went wrong with York, and I'm sure he will bounce back wiser elsewhere and I for one wish him all the luck in the world, because I will never forget my two trips to Wembley and the euphoria of promotion back to the FL. CTID
you are now down to a 10 match season, forget where you are in the league, this is a new shortened season.if anyone can win you matches your new man can,the players have got to give 110% sweat blood ,and all pull togeather, thats what they should have done before but what i have heard there was dressing but ups, that GM couldnt get to grips with,

I am not expecting a miracle but I am expecting him to see straight through some of our players who must be very astute at training ground politics, no names as for me the season starts again.
Looking at the basics attendances a helpful board we should make a comfortably mid table city & if Nigel keeps us in the league fantastic, stays on & does any better with a bit of a cup run etc for instance next season that will be me happy. Our players will hopefully put their shoulders in be professional & do what they are paid to do if not I can see quite a cull coming. Come on City!!!

'Mad for Minstermen' you are absolutely spot on with that. Absolutely no way would Gary have turned down a better offer it had come along, and we wouldn't have expected him to. He did what was required of him, and we all thank him for that.
Nigel is the man for us now though. I was thinking twice about the game against Rochdale next week due to finishing work late, but I will most certainly be there to cheer on our (hopefully!) revitalised troops.

Others will show the mean spirited graceless ignorance that they wrongly think gains respect.
They do not represent the majority who are not embarassed to give thanks for what Gary Mills achieved and recognise his commitment to the town and club.
True, the latter period was not what anyone was hoping to see.
This year has not been an enjoyable experience but the self centred posting under multiple names do not detract from the heartfelt sympathy and gratitude felt by most.

This was one of Worthington's midfield when in charge of Norwich. Not only was it a midfield of his, it was a midfield he purchased with the millions Norwich gave him to spend. Jason Jarrett? Carl Robinson? In a career of about 10 clubs, nobody paid a transfer fee for Carl Robinson. Guess who did?
Andy Hughes? 600k for a headless chicken who fights to win the ball back only to hoof it back to the opposition? Classy
Simon Charlton? A decent full back playing midfield, badly. Not only that, look up on google where Worthington compared him to Claude Makelele
This classy football. What Norwich games have you people seen, what Northern Ireland games have you been watching. It's all long ball football
In 2005 Worthington let Marc Edworthy (a fine full back) go to Derby, and bought 2 right backs for Norwich. Matthieu Louis Jean who hadn't played for 2 years at Forest. How on earth he passed the medical, because he didn't play for Norwich. Juergen Colin for 250k, who was rubbish, last seen making one appearance for Sporting Gijon against Real Madrid, losing 7-1, and never playing for them again
Andy Hughes ended up playing right back until one was bought. Actually one wasn't, because there was no money left after Worthington's lavish spending, and loan players played right back (Ryan Bertrand, you've probably seen him for Chelsea)
This is what York have got, not great experience, not class, not passing football.
Forget his masterstroke of signing Huckerby and Crouch on loan, because 5-6 other good players were funded that season. The players promoted Norwich
Remember the facts. This is not a good appointment
The only good thing about it, is he gets an instant reaction, and that's what York need. Anything after that, is very worrying
I've followed York because I like it, I'm not one of those angry idiots in the Longhurst who shout at Kerr to shoot even though he's never scored in 75 appearances. I've never watched the formations or been critical of anyone
That York team came up because of a lucky offside goal in a cup final.
To sack Mills, was one of the biggest mistakes ever.
I can't go and watch Worthington, it's become a personal thing now. He's not a nice man
Lastly, when Norwich beat Manchester United 2-0, in the press conference before the game, he said that certain players who hadn't played much recently, would be getting a go, and when they do, they can't complain that they didn't get a chance. Those players were Safri and Helveg. He brought them into the team. He put Helveg at right back for only the 3rd time that season. When he had played previously, he was put in midfield. Helveg had spent the last 10 years at AC and Inter Milan, but Worthington knew better to either drop him, or play him out of position?
Anyway, his pot shot at those 2 players backfired, Norwich beat Manchester Utd, and went on a 6-7 run which nearly saw them survive a premiership season they didn't deserve to.
So why didn't Worthington implement what happened in those 7 games, into the other 31?
This is what you've appointed.
Don't take my words for it, look up everything I've said

I used the word "follow" carefully. I don't say anything about anyone at games. I just go because it's brilliant to have league football back here
I go in the Longhurst. I hear the abuse random players get, even if they're playing well. It's disgusting. I don't mind, because I only follow them. I support another team (with the insight above, I'll leave you to guess who it is)
I didn't mention the offside goal in the play offs to be disparaging. I said it for perspective. Sacking a manager who's 2 results above the danger zone (which is actually 3 because those clubs have to catch you up), isn't very wise at all
It's a sideways step at best, it actually implies that a hasty decision will be made again in the future
Why not have just waited till the end of the season, and amicably parted. Why now? Why not do it when York are actually in trouble?
As for Worthington, He put Blackpool into trouble in his first job, after initial success he put Norwich on the path way to league one, and in taking over Northern Ireland, he put a team on a roll under Sanchez back to what they were used to, losing. Shiels knows better than me to comment about Northern Ireland
I just stuck to the facts of not what I 'apparently' know. Look up what I've stated. It's all there, plus, I commented on it because I put up with 6 years of it

And... if you don't think City are in trouble now, when do you think we might be? Wait to the end of the season? REALLY. Have you not read the vast majority of posts on here. Were you really in the Longhurst witnessing the defeats against Morecambe, Barnet, Bradford et al. I find that hard to believe. Oh, hang on, you support another team of course. I very much doubt that you came even close to feeling as gutted as I did at losing to said teams. Whatever your thoughts on NW you are obviously entitled to your opinions. However, your comments are not going to stop me from getting behind York City FC as a TRUE supporter and giving the man a chance!

I'm just saying it's very concerning that this man is here
I'm talking longer term as well. Look at his career and where teams end up after him
You can treat what I've said, or the quote above from Shiels as some kind of attempt at online trolling. I'm just saying this isn't a man of great experience as is perceived
If I wasn't out of the country, I would have been at all the games you listed. As it happens, I was just at the Morecambe and Bradford game
Just following a team, allows me to see things clearer, which is why I go. I wasn't seething at Morecambe, if I was, I was just annoyed with Ingham picking arguments with opposition strikers, the away fans in the second half, his centre backs (which seems to be a common occurance), and then that appaulling gaff which put York from being well in the game, to well out of it. (I hope that satisfy's your question that I was there, or that I go)
It happened though. Barnet was frustrating. But York are actually picking up points. To lose to a team that's just been to a major cup final and had a great season, isn't grounds to sack a manager who went into that game unbeaten in the last 2
Sack someone when they've completely failed, not when the team is picking up points

JarrettRobinsonHugheSimply drawing 2 and then losing the next game is not a good trend. We are in trouble. We are not winning enough games, if a team wins 1 in 3 its a better points haul than us scraping draws. Not winning in 11 games says it all. With this sort of form would you have left things as they were until we sat at the bottom of the table?
