York City appoint Nigel Worthington as manager

Nigel Worthington Nigel Worthington

UPDATED: NIGEL WORTHINGTON has today been appointed as the new manager of York City.

The Minstermen board moved for Worthington after the dismissal of Gary Mills in the wake of Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat by Bradford City.

Former Leeds United full-back Worthington takes over with City in 18th place in the npower League Two table, four points above the drop zone.

The first game in charge for Worthington, who was Northern Ireland boss from 2007 to 2011, will be Saturday’s trip to basement side AFC Wimbledon.

A statement from the City board said: “The decision to appoint Nigel was based on his solid Football League experience, his strong coaching ability and his extensive knowledge of players throughout the leagues.

“The York City board of directors welcomes Nigel Worthington to the club and looks forward to working with him.”

Worthington, who had a spell at Leicester City as caretaker manager in 2007, was in charge of Norwich City from 2000 to 2006, guiding the club into the Premier League in the 2003/4 season.

Following the departure of Mills, the club confirmed the exit of coaches Des Lyttle and Paul Musselwhite, while assistant manager Darron Gee has now also left.

welcome nigel, now keep us up! his knowledge of players and vast experience could prove invaluable to us as he looks to make the last few changes to strengthen the squad before the last 10 games. a back up keeper is now a must, and i can't help but think he might have a couple of surprises up his sleeve to bring in- maybe yet another striker? can this man sign a good striker?

Fantastic! Welcome to York Nigel...

After all the flack the directors have taken over the past few months (and before....), here and and elsewhere this shows the amount of commitment the directors have for the club. The quality of appointment show an imagination and ambition far exceeding that anyone on here has previously acknowledged, and must have taken a lot of of putting together. Welcome NIgel, congratulations Jason, lets move forward. COYR.

I must admit the McGills have gone up markedly in my estimations with the way that they have acted over this whole situation. Patient and yet ruthless in their handling of Mills. They clearly hand someone lined up ready to take over once the stubborn, untouchable Mills was given enough rope to hang himself. They've acted swiftly and IMO selected a manager with all the correct attributions to take the club to the next level.

Welcome Nigel and once again a big respect to the McGills.

Looks a very good appointment, someone with a strong backgrond of top League experience, a wide range of contacts and a players' manager. Good luck Nigel and all City fans will be right behind you and the players for the final push to get those 50+ points! One small request, would be to get in a good, proven goalscorer and perhaps another centre-half and left-back! Finally, the YCFC Board have the respect of this City fan and they had to make changes in the light of our results and inconsistences that have plagued us (Burton Albion apart), throughout 2013. Well this is really something else! A former international and Premiership manager!

Still a bit saddened by the loss of Gary Mills, but it probably had to happen. The key was the replacement, and this fast turnaround to bring in someone of Worthington's class could be massive for us.

Got to say I'm very impressed by the McGills. Nice people, but clearly "ruthless" business people too. That's actually a perfect combination when times are tough.

I'm hugely excited about how this should turn us around and the sort of players he will be able to attract (even on loan, before someone says we can't go on a spending spree).

Come on City!!

Agree with the above posts if anybody doubted the commitment of the Mcgill family to this Club they can think again. It must have been a heartbreaking decision and an unenviable task for Jason Mcgill to remove Gary Mills from his post as manager-I myself was saddened by the decision I thought GM would be with us for a long time but I can see where the Board were coming from memories of 2004 were looming large when we couldn't buy a win and were dropping like a stone into Non League oblivion and for it to happen again could prove to be the demise of the Club-I think Nigel Worthington will be a very popular appointment welcomed by the fans and I wish him all the best.

He hasn't managed a league club in 7 years and he hasn't been a manager since 2011. Don't mean to dampen things but is this really the sort of manager we want to come in and make an IMMEDIATE impact. It will take him some time to get back into the swing of things again...

Unless we were able to poach a successful manager from another club (unlikely within the available timeframe) whomever we appointed would have to be
a) a recently-sacked failure with a previous good record (eg Westley)
b) someone who'd recently let his club down by walking out on it (eg the loose cannon Di Canio) or
c) someone who'd been out of the game for a while.

On balance, I'm glad the board has gone for option c, but only time will tell.

Every true York City fan will be hoping that Nigel Worthington can steer us to a position of safety. It was very sad, and of course a bit of a gamble, sacking Gary Mills. But we can not look back. Its time for everyone at the club to focus on preserving our league status. To be perfectly honest I am just relieved that we are not welcoming Graham Westley and his "pit bull" Dino.

Lets get 100% behind Nigel, his staff and all the players through this week and particularly on saturday. One major advantage of this fella, as hinted at in the article, is his previous experience with many players at all levels and am sure he'll be able to draw in plenty of favours regarding bringing some bodies in. When does the loan deadline end does anyone know?

A few Norwich fans I know have said they can't speak highly enough of him as he really puts all his efforts into the job and they played some superb football in their promotion season to the PL (granted he had Dean Ashton upfront!).

I did hear that Worthington was lined up and ready to take the job after the trip to Rotherham, but our performance was encouraging enough for them to give Mills another game.

Garrowby Turnoff says...
9:40am Mon 4 Mar 13

I suppose if Di Matteo winning the Champions League with Chelsea doesn't guarantee you a job for the next few weeks then Mills had no chance.

Nigel Worthington is no gamble. If the side still struggle then it definitely is the player's fault.

You stupid York fans ought to take a serious reality check. You've been out of the Football League for a long time and it shows. Clubs like Fleetwood have a far bigger playing budget than York. Gary Mills had done a great job so far. Producing a very competitive team which tries to play football. Only very foolish people underestimate a draw at Oxford and a draw at Rotherham. On Saturday York lost two goals to individual efforts which no manager can control. So far York have had a good season after promotion. It's a shame your dizzy directors (the McGills) and some of your feckless fans don't realise that.

Calling us stupid is bang out of order. How rude. I'm the most opinionated person alive but this is incredible. Drawing too many games has got us into this mess so go one Einstein what would you of done? Sat back and watched us get relegated I imagine. FFS.

Decent solid appointment. Should do well.

On another note, I am still staggered about some of the abuse handed out to Mills on here by a minority of 'fans'.

Yes, he made mistakes this season and yes, he signed some poor players in the summer. BUT he worked wonders with last years conference squad in comparison to what some clubs like Fleetwood, Wrexham, Luton spent.

If anything, he put too much faith in the players from last season. What have Kerr, Smith, Blair, Walker, Paddy done this season to justify their renewed contracts as football league players?

Yes Gary could be stubborn but this also worked in our favour last season when he managed to take us where many managers have failed.

He should leave our great club with fond memories and our gratitude rather than riducule. He left the club in a much, much better place than where he found it so he will always been seen as success.

All the best GM and welcome to Nigel!

It always surprises me that so called fans from other teams take the time to comment on others forums. They must lead a real sad life to do so.

Anyway in response to your comment, it would be far more stupid for us to sit back and gladly accept your team to relegation whilst the manager refused in public to change his ways. If you have ever supported a team relegated from the football league you will know what i mean by this. Not only would it been years in the conference again (probably the hardest league to gain promotion from) but also risked the clubs very existence. Probably no new ground, no McGills, no future, no club. So the board had no choice but to act.

Nobody is doubting what Mills has done for the club, but his shear stubbiness in the end cost him is job. We will always be grateful for his achievements and eight great days in May. Time to move on now and welcome a new manager with new ideas and without tinted glasses.

So please can you now go and play in the road.

Welcome to the club Nigel. I'm sure he will turn us around and get 3 wins against the teams around us with the players we've already got at the club. It annoys me all the posters on this sight having a go at Jason Walker and believing we need a new striker at the club before the end of the season. At times this season GM should have dropped JW but he has played as well as he could have done, but without any support up front I find it difficult to see what more he could do. He certainly isnt a bad striker. On Saturday it was typical of his season, one difficult opportunity( he had to dig the ball out from under his feet) for all the game because he had absolutely no service in the final third. In other matches hes been taking set pieces as hes the only one that has been able to put in a quality ball.
What Nigel needs to do is tweak the system, we all can see that and bring Reedy back from the Abbey. I do hope out this appointment works out ( mcguiness springs to mind ). It's another big gamble by the board and I suspect the mcGills dont have the resources to do what they did last season if we were to go down to get us back up, so this is probably the cheaper option. I would like to know what his contract is but well done to all concerned to make this happen and the future has become brighter. Looking forward to The Wombles now. Keep the faith

No, we haven't had a good season. No other team in L2 has won fewer games than City, our home form has been abysmal and we are just 4 points off the bottom teams who have a game in hand. The change had to be made for the future of the Club. And Mills' arrogance and stubbornness made the fans turn against him. All the best to Nigel Worthington and time for the players to roll their sleeves up and shed some blood, sweat and tears over the last 10 games.

Welcome to this fantastic City of York Nigel, now work some Irish magic over the next 10 games!
No they havent.

I was sad to see Gary Mills go, as he did a fantastic job for us in the time he was here, and at times we played some great football, but just recently have lost our way a little, although I must say the performance at Oxford, although not great was a battling team performance.
However, I think the appointment of Nigel Worthington is to say the least , quite a coup. Yes he hasnt mananged at club level for a while, but his pedigree is not to be questioned, and he is proven at league level, and indeed premiership.
This for me shows a statement of intent from the board, about taking us forward.
So can I ask, that the negativity stops, the support begins....... big time , and we cheer the team to Div 2 survival, and push on for season 2013 / 2014.

All the best Gary ............. and thanks for the memories.

Welcome to Nigel Worthington, on the face of it a sound appointment, but whoever got the job, the task from now until the end of the season is going to be savagely difficult. How will he turn it round, Im not going to tell him something i dont know but the obvious is we need a new keeper and fast, and some players are simply not good enough since promotion. Ingham is a shot stoppper at best, we are desperate for someone who can command the box and help defenders.
Good luck Nigel, you will need it.

His win rate (36.7%) is lower than that of Gary Mills (43.5%), but it's a very promising appointment. There will be a lot of teams in L2 and L1 that wish they had managed to get him. So well done the McGills. That said, it's still up to the players to make our position safe in L2. If they can do that I think Nigel will get us into the Championship if he is given the time.

Well I was a bit gutted for Mills but have to say the swift action and a prompt appointment of a man of some experience has got me a little impressed. As some have already said this guy should command some respect in the dressing room on the basis of his CV....and if that doesn't spur the players to turn something on then nothing will. Hold tight could be a rollercoaster !!

credit to the board got new experienced respect few gamesed man straight in no time for players to mope about and gives him 5 days to work with what hes got for saturdays game, and ex defender should sort out defence lapses quickly and tighten up,agree with many on some players kerr has been shocking last few games with blame to others than concentrate on his own game smith will follow millsy in time, walker works hard but sad to say not cut out for this level although played in 442 might surprise us all with the right partner dare i say rankine in the short term, rodman should go back to aldershot had his chance blew it,doig well what can i say reminds me of darren anderton and thats not skill or ability the rest our new manager has a chance to work with and repair somehow i feel that kerr may be a first casulty of the new regime welcome nigel and good luck from all city fans

Not sure what to make of this appointment. On the face of it a positive move getting a manager with higher division and international experience. Going against him he's not been at a league club for a number of years now so you wonder how in touch he is with today's players, particularly in the lower leagues where York will be doing their shopping. Not to mention will he be able to adapt his style to League 2, and be up to date with all the most modern methods that the majority of clubs are using these days. Will be interesting to see how this one pans out.

I think it's a great appointment and I wish him and the team lots of success, but I'm trying to see it from Worthington's point of view. What's his motivation? A way back into football? Does he see it as a demotion? Will he want to manage in non-league if the worse happens? Will he jump to a Championship team if a better offer comes along? Will the players feel they are certain to be replaced in time? Will that affect them in the last 10 games? Just wondering. It seems slightly too good to be true - assuming managers actually do make a big difference (which I don't think they do).

Hopefully Nigel will gee up some of the players who have great ability but not shown it recently for some reason. Quite a few deadwood to remove but in the injury absence of McGurk we need a big, commanding central defender and striker with same qualities. We also need a goalkeeper now. A manager of his experience should not take too long to assess what we have and identify those we don,t need.I could name several but won,t as I,m sure many others could. Good luck Nigel!

Managers dont make a difference?? John Ward, Di Matteo, Eddie Howe the list goes on...

Fred Barber has joined from Bury today so there's some current league experience to fill that gap people were complaining about.

I think all the players (besides maybe Ingham) will have huge respect for a manager that has played and managed at the highest level. To use win rate averages is a joke! Premiership/Champion
ship v Conference!

All good questions pip007 sadly we will just have to wait to find out the answers in the fullness of time.As regards whats in it for him i,m guessing he,s just a football man who feels he,s been out of the game(particularly the league scene) for long enough and is wanting a new challenge. Its going to be really interesting to see which players are ready to fight for NW and rise to the challenge and which its just too much effort to bother, even two or three good new faces brought in by our new manager can change the spirit of the team.

henleazeyorkie says...
2:11pm Mon 4 Mar 13

A good appointment on the face of it, and I expect results will improve off the back of it.

My only "dark" thought is that NW will pull us clear this season, get us off to a good start next season, then (on the back of all the good stuff he's done before) disappear off to a Championship side around November / December when the first round of sackings commence, in the hope that he'll be able to perform another "Norwich"

That said, welcome and the best of luck Nigel

I had no idea, just pulling his leg. Rolling contract seems sensible just in case it does all go wrong.

If somebody asked me 10 years ago whether then current Norwich manager Nigel Worthington would be one day manager of York I would have laughed and I still can't believe it has happened. I believe his past experience will become valuable to the club and posibly be the difference between styaing up, or falling back down.

Of course, it is sad to see Gary Mills leave. he always seemed a nice kind of guy, who cared about his team. You may argue his tactics this season havn't been the best but last season, they gained us promotion. Something we had been fighting for, and for what seemed unlikely to happen until Mills came in.
