City of York Athletic Club runner Richard Buck takes relay gold at European Indoor Championships

CITY of York Athletic Club runner Richard Buck struck relay gold with Great Britain at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg.

The 26-year-old was part of a 4x400 metres GB quartet – along with Michael Bingham, Nigel Levine and Richard Strachan – which stormed to victory in three minutes 5.78 seconds in last night’s final.

Great Britain were initially disqualified after Buck put a foot in the infield on the second leg, although the York athlete appeared to be pushed off the track by a Polish rival.

Team officials immediately lodged an appeal and the quartet were reinstated in the gold medal position.

Buck said: “He knocked me. I tried to stay in, but I had to drop a foot out wide.”

The victory provided Buck, who had struggled with a hamstring problem in the weeks leading up to the championships, with his seventh international medal, but his first gold.
