York City sack manager Gary Mills

Gary Mills Gary Mills

YORK City tonight sacked manager Gary Mills in the wake of a 2-0 npower League Two defeat by Bradford City.

The Minstermen board acted after a run of 11 games without a win, stretching back to New Year's Day.

A board statement read: "It is with regret that the York City board of directors has terminated the contract of manager Gary Mills with immediate effect.

"The recent playing form, which has resulted in the team achieving only six points out of a possible 33 points, has led the board to this extremely difficult decision.

"The York City board of directors’ absolute priority is to safeguard the club’s Football League status and an improvement in results is essential due to our current League position.

"We would like to thank Gary Mills for his great contribution to York City Football Club and for managing last season’s promotion team. We wish Gary the very best for his future career.

"The York City board hopes to make an announcement regarding the club’s new manager within the next week."

Unfortunately they were left with no option. Far too stubborn and his dealings in the transfer market was dreadful.

Thank you for some fantastic memories, i just hope you haven't killed the club.

All the best back in the conference because nobody will give you a football league club to manage.

All the best Millsy. He will always be remembered for providing one of the best seasons a City fan has ever seen. Some fans need to remember that and let him part company from York with some class and our gratitude.

However, some woeful signing, terrible loan deals & a stubbornness to change tactics have ultimately been his downfall.

Really, really hope the board already have somebody lined up to lead the club into one of its most important run of matches in recent history.

All the best Gary and thanks for the memories that will live with (true) York fans forever.

Whoever comes in next (and i think it is a big desicion to make) will have a tough job to keep us up as the current players with the odd exception just are not good enough, the odd good performance and then back to avaerage at best the next game.

The question the board should have asked themselves before firing Mills is this: If we could bring in Alex Ferguson, could he keep us up with these same players. If the answer is no, you don't fire the manager you've got. In other words, as I've said before, it's got very little to do with the manager and everything to do with the players.

The players were on their way home when they got called back to the club. Gary Mills and many of the players were close to tears.

Players in the dark about what happens on Monday.

Sad day and an end to a short era of great passing football and fabulous memories under GM. Not looking forward to the long ball football that every other team in this division plays.

Results speak for themselves and the board have decided to gamble. There are no guarantees but these are desperate times and it's a brave decision.

Most of the players are out of contract in the summer and will probably now expect to be released. Are they going to be thinking about York City's future or their own? Don't expect anyone to shed blood in the next 10 games when they know they won't be here next season.

Sorry mills picked the team, the buck stops with him, for me the players lost faith in him and his negitive system a long time ago, 4-5-1 at home,( until it,s too late), lost him is job not the players, if the new man puts them in an attacking formation they ALL believe in, NOT JUST THE CHOSEN FEW!!, they are more then capable of getting a results, and we will see a different side.

Must have been a really tough decision, but we cannot afford to go down, literally. If it were just the team you might question this decision, but too many mistakes have been made at this level. Signings from Fusbal, signings who have not played for a year (Dobie), signings other L2 teams don't want. Signings who have a reputation for being injury prone.
And then we come to the system. Adherence to a 4-5-1 which isolates Walker. A leaky defensive situation which has not been addressed. A left back situation which was never addressed. No plan B when its clear teams in this league had worked us out by Autumn. Not playing McGurk when he was fit - persisting with under-performing players week after week.

Sorry to go and I feel awful in some ways as Mills gave us some wonderful memories last season AND some wonderful performances. But honestly, at this level, his performance has NOT met professional standards. The mistake list is just too long.

But good luck, Gary - thanks for the memories.

Right decision, wrong timing.
Should either have been done in Dec with enough time for a new man to build in the transfer window, or at the end of the season.
I thought we'd turned the corner - especially with the display at Rotherham.
Haven't we got home games vs Accrington and Plymouth to come? That was surely 6 points and possibly a scuzzy win elsewhere would keep us up.
Still think we'll stay up - but are we going for a short time 'kick up' guy or something more for the future?
Have the rest of GM,'s team been shown the door?

I think everyone has to thank Gary for everything he did to get us out the conference and win the Throphy, and wish him well in the future. He also has not had much luck with injuries such as Coulson and TY in particular this season. However his persistence to continue to play Jason Walker over recent weeks has probably resulted in his sacking
What does amaze me on here is how the fans have a go at the Board. They made the decision to bring in Mills when they did as they knew a change was needed to get us out of the Conference, they also appear by the number of players Mills has been able to bring in this season have backed Mills choices on numberous occasions including recent loans, and have now acted before it was too late ! It must have been hard for them after last season. As why not in January we were mid table we were regularly competing by the number of draws and Mills asked for a number of players which he got.
So tonight raise a glass to thank Gary for all he done and one to the Board as they do have the future of the club at heart.

We didn't romp to the League and we had some very poor results last year too. Good luck Gary but your intransigence in a run that is "relegation form" has been your downfall. If it is broke - do fix it! Nevertheles the timing is late and we should have aimed to get John Ward before he went to Bristol. Look at them now! My guru at the game says we need a new Walwyn more than a new manager and I fully agree. But GM must have remembered Maggie in the 80s and tried to do away with strikers. Arthur for boss anyone?

Dress it up how you like, if we relied on home results we would be bottom of the league and cut adrift by now, only average away form has kept us from being there, i would call that failure, but that apart, the way he wasted the clubs restricted funds should be enough to get him the bullit alone.

Their minds will be on their exit plan and checking their phones for calls from their agent. They are about to be made redundant and their future mortgage payments will be more important than City staying up. Ask any player that was part of the Brass sinking ship. He'd already told half the team they'd be gone before the season had ended.

Quite a lot of the current players thought they would get another contract under GM so survival was vital. The team will now be disintegrated and each man will be looking after their own futures, not the team.

Overall, sad news but understandable in professional footballing terms. Thanks for last season Gary and the two Wembley finals, together with the Mansfield second-leg play-off, all of which were terrific days out and historical, great games of football for all connected with York City FC. Having reflected on today's result and our performance, it has definately started to look like visiting teams are eyeing us up as "easy meat" and fancy their chances against us, so something had to change and now must change and which gets this team to play to their maximum potential and particularly alter their attacking formations and inject some more steel into the defence and midfield because we still get bossed and bullied far too much. With ten games to go, players, fans and all connected with YCFC must do their bit and make certain that what we achieved and gained last season, is not lost straightaway. Hope the new manager is appointed by Monday and that he has the rest of the week to prepare for Wimbledon and then Rochdale - two very big games for us. If we can somehow gain maximum points from the Accrington, Plymouth, Rochdale home games, then we should be allright but testing times lay ahead. COYR.

Things aren't going well but IMO the wrong (and a cowardly) decision. I thought the board would have the courage to stick with him until the end of the season but it wasn't to be. I think we would have stayed up and I hope that this doesn't cost us (but we'll never know what was best and I understand why others see things differently).

Change doesn't necessarily improve things (but he would have had to go when the Knights come to Bootham Crescent as we wouldn't have been able to play his passing football then.)

As a fan I have to leave this behind though and support whoever we get in... and when we hopefully stay up put up with those who'll think they've been proved right.
All that matters is that we stay up.

Have read the 120+ postings thus far. Consensus appears to be a big thank you to Gary Mills for what he did last season and for stabilising the season before. Totally agree and a big thank you to him for getting us back into the league - not an easy task. Have to say some of the football we played in the Conference was the best I have seen for sometime. However this season has been a different kettle of fish and if we are honest the clues were there first day of the season against Wycombe. Quite a few bad decisions - never agreed with the appointment of Lyttle as a coach - and dealings in the transfer market left him open to criticism; I think he harbours after that Brian Clough reputation for turning bad boys into stars. In any walk of life you consolidate before you move forward. Gary arguably did not help himself with talk of winning the Carling Cup and back-to-back promotions. He should have managed expectations and a statement saying that this season was one of consolidaton would have done this.

I think the board are also aware of past mistakes with Brass so can understand their response.

Where do we go from here? Who wants to manage York and who is available? Adkins would be ideal but beyond us. Dolan highly unlikely as he sued the board.Simon Grayson? Not bothered who it is as long as they keep us up. An interim manager perhaps?

I have been visiting Bootham Crescent since 1944 and have never been as shocked as I am now on hearing what the McGills have done. Gary Mills one of the best handful of Managers we have had in my long experience should not have been shown the door with only 10 games remaining. Who do you blame for the missed chances the Manager or the players! Were the McGills thinking of this after the gritty performances away to Oxford and Rotherham. Would this have happened if Rotherham hadn't scored in the dying seconds on Tuesday night. Of course not. But Rankine missed his man and the cross came in!
I would like to place on record my heartfelt appreciation of what Gary Mills did for York City last season. A great guy. An honest one. He was within inches of being made a Freeman of York for those Wembley trips and the match away at Mansfield.A truckload of wonderful memories. I fear the worst now. The guts has been ripped out of the team and loads of supporters with this decision

Cheap option ! Get Reed back from Cambridge if we can, were he,s wasted as a winger, put him alongside Rankine, and watch us climb the table, they always played well together before walker came along, 9 in 12 starts last season, and 4 in 5 this one, he could still finish our top scorer.

I have it on good authority that Graham Westley is the new manager. I think this is a terrible mistake. The man is a bully and a fool. At PNE he antagonised and alienated his best players and got them relegated. McGill has panicked at a time when a cool head was required. Westley will take us down and all those who have called for Mills' head will regret their fervour for change. This is a very sad day for the club

It is so overwhelmingly sad that the spirit within the team (and club?) has plummeted so much since last season, culminating in today's decision.

Obviously players whose skills were superior to Conference competitors were going to come up against more challenging players in the league, week in week out. But it's like they just don't believe in themselves any more. Is this because they assumed they'd be as good this season, they never know what the team's going to be and can't therefore predict teammates' moves or positions; they're being playing out of position, or having to stick to tactics that just aren't effective; or because something's gone wrong with the managerial dynamics? Blanchett and Henderson were implying on Twitter that Mills' approach had upset some players. I certainly found it unbelievable that he kept sticking with Smith after some dreadful games, when TY was fit and paired well with Kerr. Kerr himself seems to have lost all his passing skills and is a shadow of his former self. And today Rankine should have been on half an hour earlier to give him time to make a difference.

I so wanted the cherry on the icing on the cake after last season, with Millsy learning as he took us onwards and upwards. That now will never be, with him anyhow. Such an achievement last season, and such a debt of gratitude we owe him for it. But whoever thinks the Board should have waited for relegation before sacking him is just plain stupid. They did the only thing left open to him. I suspect they have someone waiting in the wings, the rumours are that it is Graham Westley, and that he was ready on Wednesday. If this is true, then the Board held off and still gave GM a chance to redeem himself today. Maybe it was his comments to Barry on the radio afterwards, that suggested that he had no intention of changing anything to halt the demise, that made them act. Let's make no mistake, they loved Gary, they would not have wanted to do this and it will have really upset them. But what choice did they have, really.

Thanks for the good times Gary. Onwards and upwards. CTID.

I like Mills and the style of football we played at the beginning of last season, but he has said himself that he wouldn't change his tatics and his transfers dealings not been great this season so it's probably the right decision.

I assume teams have a bit more nous at this level and the opposition know how to play against us, get tight on walker and don't give him time.

I did expect more from the likes of Blair, paddy mac, walker this season as they looked a class above in the conference

Move on its done decision made agree or disagree at your leisure, something had to change in a team that can neither score freely or keep clean sheets. Like most of you I we did Wembley twice playoffs etc witnessed some lovely football at times but we were fortunate to get up as overall we were probably the third or fourth best conference side. During that season I cast an envious eye on players like Matt Andre Gray & in particular a few of the centrebacks. We apparently blew the budget to accomplish the great double & now its left us with either a squad who were shown too much loyalty by Gary or one he could not afford to strengthen take your choice of truth. The new manager will have to take a long hard look at what is available to him & we will be there supporting as its the club the crack & the football we go for not Gary. The board have done what they feel is in the best interest of the club its now down to the players to do what they are paid to do & certain amongst them will have to admit that they are accountable for the loss of our best manager for years, too stubborn perhaps & certainly has his undroppable favourites I just hope that the new manager sees the truth in the team with a fresh pair of eyes & makes the best of things, some good players in our squad just need making best use of. Glad I clapped the team off & will certainly be behind them for the remainder of this season.Cmon City!!!

Massive shock when I heard this even though I know his position has been threatened following the comments from the board 3 games ago which appeared to put his position in doubt. I have (as many) mixed feelings about Gary. Last season I had many games when I criticised his decisions in terms of substitutes but also his signings/ loans which must have cost a lot of cash despite many of the players hardly ever playing and the same has happened this season. Remember Swallow, Tonne, will we see the new signings this season make an impact? However, nobody can match his passion, commitment and desire. His "stubbornness" to not change his tactics may reflect on his mentor BC and potentially may make Gary a successful manager in the future but as he is still learning his trade he should consider supervision from someone who has been through management and learned from experience. I work in the NHS and supervision is mandatory. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been doing a job you can always learn from someone else who you respect. I wish Gary the best in his future as should any genuine YCFC supporter and anyone with a passion for the club should raise their voices and passionately support the club till the end of the season. A passionate vocal crowd will make the difference when the players next take the pitch.

I agree.

I liked Mills and really wished he could of taken us all the way to League One but alas it hasnt worked out. It could be down to several reasons, injuries to key players, the odd draw that should of been a win, missed out on pre-season targets, scared of getting beat etc etc. Unfortunately he left the board with no option will his public stance on refusing to change his formation. Nearly all his transfers and loan deals have not worked out and must of cost the club financially.

I thank him from the bottom of my heart for last season but no person is bigger than the club and he had to go.

The board have a massive decision to make now in making sure they appoint the right man for the job and secure our place in the football league. It must be a manager with lower league experience who can regroup the players and get the results we desperatly need to survive. I would like to see him appointed by mid week in order for him to look at the players before the Wimbledon game. The next 10 games are as important as the Play Off final for future of this fantastic football club.

CTID.

Anyone who can keep us in the League would do for me. My worry is that we may not have the players to go out if need be and clog their way to safety.

I would take four 'ugly' wins from now to the season's end. Because I feel 50 points may not be enough this season to keep a side up.

Lets move on and support the Club no matter who the choice of person is to take the helm next, whether it is Mr Wesley, Mr Curle or whoever.

I loved Gary's style of play, but I realise Jason had to make a tough decision because after all the survival of the Club comes first above any individual.

Jason made a mistake over eight yrs ago keeping hold of Chris Brass, he was NOT going to do it again.

Well thought through words. But am not sure about your last point. Players will surely be playing for contracts next season, trying to impress the new manager? Limited amount of vacancies for L2 footballer and I'm not sure many of the current side would walk into other football league sides, most will be looking at the Conference.

It's been a worrying time anyway, not picking up many points, can't win at home and sliding down the league table. I would have stuck with Mills until the end of the season as I think we have just enough to stay up. Who knows, we might just get a manager who can do with us as John Ward has done at Bristol Rovers. One thing's for sure though, there'll be no more silly Garyizms.

Absolutely.
And I can't believe the poster who says the decision to sack Mills was 'cowardly'. I respect those who thing it was right or wrong, only time will tell. But 'cowardly'? Never - it was a brave decision and IMHO a very sad but necessary one. Nothing was changing, every game was the same script virtually; we play some attractive football but fail to win due to defensive mistakes and not hitting the back of the net. Even Gary himself admitted he was at a loss over what to do next. Does any supporter who has been regularly these last few weeks feel that a hat load of wins were just round the corner? I don't. No team is *that* unlucky - Rotherham okay, last minute equaliser, but 1-0 is never enough, to see matches out, you've got to continue to press when in front. Barnet was the same but with different timings; 1-0 if front and then we were appalling. We'd forgotten how to win and nothing - not formations, tactics or playing individuals out of position, was changing.

Over summer we made only one successful signing - Coulson. Some other signings have been laughable - Fusbal players and retirees in particular. Players brought in and immediately loaned out or never seen again. All smacks of a manager out of his depth at this level.

I loved the football in the Conference under Mills, he seems a genuine guy too. But at League two level, the buck stops with him and the mistakes are there to be seen. Am sorry, but that is the reality - and I'm as sad as anyone over what has happened.

Honestly as much as I'm sad for the guy I honestly think the board have now made the right decision. They have to think of the club first and its probable end if we do go down. I think Gary made a complete hash of this season right from the start with too much loyalty and the crazy decision not to strengthen the defence. The signings over the last 12 months have been pretty awfull on the whole with most no better or indeed worse than we already had. Even when we needed a strong goal scorer we ended up with Everson who went straight out, McDaid who was not what we needed, and Rankin who can't hit a barn door from five yards. The list of forwards alone over that period make grim reading with the likes of Ashikodi, Dobie, Henderson. Add in the fact we have players playing out of position, weird substitutions, and a refusal to change when it's obvious other managers had worked us out and I can't see where we were going other than back down. I was certainly struggling to see where the next win was coming from as it was the year we went down. They could have given Gary the Wimbledon game next week but in all honestly I doubt we would have won that anyway and its another game down. Still feel bad but I don't want the conference again.

10 games for whoever comes. God this is too stupid for words
So that would make you in your 80s then and people in their eighties use words like truckload and have alzheimers! I appreciate what Mills has done but last time we went out we really should have changed now -if not before.
Nasty spiteful and innumerate little response, circuitous route dorset. My mother uses terms like truckload and shedload on occasions and she's 85. Why should you assume someone in their 80s would not? They've both been in regular use since the early 1970's, when people now in their 80s were in their 40s. But in any event there's no indication that lifelong is in his 80s. The maths says that if lifelong was four in 1944 he'd be 73 now.

Westley seems far from everyone's cup of tea, but he hasn't even been offered it yet to our knowledge. If he is offered it maybe some of our players need some tough love, they certainly haven't been performing at the levels they can.

I must say thanks very much to Gary Mills for all he did for York City FC, apart from the Billy McEwan Conference era the last 8+ years have been regretful and forgettable and we were going nowhere fast until Gary got us out of there. It's a shame Gary lost the players, I heard from a colleague who talked to one of them that the players had lost all respect for Mills due to his playing players out of position and ignoring others, e.g. Smith to Centre Forward and Reed left on the bench and Parslow used as a holding midfielder when there were plenty of good midfield options not being selected.

Ah well, onwards and upwards - best of luck to the new guy first job is keep us up then build from there

I truly believe Gary Mills would have kept us up looking at the remaining fixtures and the obvious commitment to him by the players. The question is whether a new man at the helm at this late stage will have an adverse or positive effect. He will have little time to get to know the team or to experiment with other formations and may not have the support of the players. On the other hand often players will raise their game to impress a new manager.
The fixture list suggests that if we play to our potential we will survive.
On a separate point GM clearly made some poor signings but let's not forget he had no budget other than for wages and had to gamble.
I am sure he will have success in the future elsewhere and wish him luck.

After having had several hours to let Gary Mills sacking sink in. I am convinced that the board had no other option, but to sack him. We are in free-fall and look doomed to relegation. Of course a change of Manager will not guarantee our safety, but it could clear the air and give us a better chance of survival. I am also highly suspicious of Graham Westley for he is just as arrogant as Gary Mills. I will never forget being at Stevenage for our last match of the season. Martin Foyle walked towards Westley to shake hands, but he was completely blanked. I thought then "You arrogant horrible little b*****d". Only time will tell!

Despite the cynical and disparaging remarks to my original posts by one or two individuals the enormity of the decision made by the McGills will be sinking in this Sunday morning at Bootham Crescent. They will be asking themselves who can come in with only 10 games to play and somehow guarantee survival in the FL. Is there someone out there with the credentials to turn things around who can lift the spirits of the players, gain their immediate confidence and indeed the supporters in such a short space of time. What kind of contract do we offer this individual and indeed what will be the scenario if all goes belly up!
This is a huge huge gamble by the owners of BC who thanks to their generosity have kept the football club going financially through the darkest days. But have they thought this through to only a successful outcome.Whoever is appointed, next week at Wimbledon assumes an importance now greater than any of last seasons triumphs at Wembley.
I just hope that the McGills have thought this through to a final outcome

tomwillo1 says...

My Number 1 choice would be Phil Brown. Westley did a good job at Stevenage but they had a big strong side who were more a set piece side. We are the opposite. Keith Curle would be a good option, thought it was harsh when he got sacked at Notts County. Another option if i was in charge would be taking a big gamble on a joint player managers role, Jonathan Greening and Richard Cresswell! Top players still as well.

YorkCityLuke says...

Nicky Butt sounds like an interesting option if he can be tempted - a good player, fairly young so he knows the modern game and won't be too set in his ways, a 'big name' to inspire the players. Same for Barmby really, although given his last job seems to have been managing Hull it's a fair step-down the leagues.

It`s a results business and he had to go. The writing has been on the wall and his arrogance at still playing 4-3-3 when clearly it doesn`t work in this league has cost him his job. Also his failure to start with Rankine for the last 3 games. Why sign if he is only going to get a 5 minute cameo appearance ? I agree totally with Badger43 ( hope you survive the cull !!) Thank you GM for the best season I can remember with two Wembley victories. Good luck in your next job.

I agree with the general feelings on here. Sad for Gary that it has come to this but deepy grateful and will never forget him getting us back in the League. Nobody who saw him fall to his knees at Wembley when we won promotion could doubt his passion and his desire to get York up.

It's just a shame that he would not change his game plan. Other sides had found us out and we needed to be more flexible. Some of the signings have been poor and some of our old players are in a league to high. The sacking is a gamble but I think Gary backed himself into a corner and gave The Chairman no other choice.

Lets hope whoever comes in can keep us up and then have a clear out and bring some strength into the club over the summer so we can build in the League.

We will NOT go down-home games v Rochdale, Plymouth and Accrington will see us stay in this league. Other away points will be a bonus. The club is bigger than the manager and players. Relegation certainly would be a disaster but we are not there yet.Still 4 points above the zone. KEEP THE FAITH!

Just watched league show and agreed with comments made on there that sacking a manager can go either way, lets hope it goes right way for us, still some poor teams when you watch the highlights. Watched Bradfords goals and Inghams was a real howler, that mistake probably cost GM his job, well the final nail in his coffin!

It was a huge gamble whatever they did though. They had stated results needed to improve and in the next three games we picked up two points from a possible nine. What if they decided to do as they did with Brass and we again went down ?
In my view they were in a terrible situation knowing relegation would probably kill the club, its not like they could then say hey we were loyal and it failed but we move on. I doubt there would be a York City to move on with. I would imagine Jason has had a few sleepless nights.

Fair comment Brahma and my one was exactly as you say - it wasn't really what I meant and in hindsight a very stupid comment at the end of a crappy day. Apologies to all!

CTID.
Excellent post

Couldn't have put it better myself!

One has to be so sorry for Gary, who has put his soul into our club, has got us 2 wins at Wembley and a return to the League, only to be sacked after a poor, yet unlucky run. If half the draws had been wins, we'd be challenging for promotion.
Yet, he did seem stubborn (although it was him running the team and not the handful of desperate knockers on this site) and the persistence with wasting JW up front as lone striker seemed to be ebbing away the strenghth of a talented yet lightweight squad.
What we don't know is how the relationship between the Manager, Club and Players had been developing over the weeks. I very much hope that we get a statement from all concerned, so that the air can be cleared and we can move on.
One correspondent , here, suggests tht York has obviously got the replacement lined up. I certainly hope so, because if this sacking proves to have been a knee-jerk reaction, in panic, it will have been the most stupid move this club can have made for a long time. We were far from doomed, as many have been pointing out, but Im not sure now and for the first time since this crisis started to unfold I'm worried. I'll be at AFCW next week, when a lot of questions could be answered. We need a huge turn out of away fans to show the players that we still have confidence in them.
Whatever might have been hapening and is now going to happen, " Good luck Gary. A lot of people are going to miss you and are going to be looking out for you, whatever might have been going on under the surface. I hope you get massive success in the future and will still feel a pang of pride for what you have achieved here and an ongoing interest in us.

Bring back Mills :

Worthington's managerial career started as the player-manager at Blackpool at the beginning of the 1997–98 season. He soon retired from playing to take on sole managerial duties, but two and a half seasons in charge ended with his resignation following a dip in form that saw the club lying in the thick of the Second Division relegation battle. "I have taken the club as far as I can," he stated

At Norwich City

Norwich's majority shareholders, Delia Smith and Michael Wynn-Jones, released a statement expecting Worthington to improve the team's performance in the following matches.Norwich's following game faced heavy protests before the next game against Burnley which was also on sky and a 4–1 defeat to Burnley, was Worthington's final game in charge as he was sacked almost immediately after the result

Sadly, the writing has been on the wall for a few weeks. This has been in the main due to Gary's stubborness playing the system he does - and some players in the positions he did. Last year was an absolutely awesome year and for that I thank Gary VERY much.

Things that work in one division don't always work in another as has been seen. Let us not forget that the bulk of our current team is both young and the one that got us promoted from the conference. We are not a cash rich club and sadly the lottery wasn't won last night so I can't put a few quid in...

We have both the players, management and fans to keep us up this year and try to consolidate next year so let's get behind them all and pray we get out of the current mess.

Thanks again Gary and all the best for your future.

A good Conference manager but clearly out of his depth in L2. Stubbornness and a host of poor signings adding to the list of negatives. His tactical nous is poor, flexibilty is lacking and he has almost dared the board to sack him in recent weeks ! The only area he has grown in is his own 'self-belief' Some of his ongonig team selections and substitutions have been odd to say the least and result have suffered accordingly. Some of those slagging off the and have clearly not been to many games this season or have been in a coma since Webley.

Westley should not be welcomed to the club in any way shape or form, a nasty individual who was a disgrace at Stevenage. Phil Brown would get my vote tbh but I will wait with eager anticipation next week. After a few hours thought re Millsy, the board have backed the manager 110% and brought in players after players at his request. Unfortunately it was getting rather desperate and, after GM stated that if the board wanted a 442 formation they had better find a new manager the writing was on the wall. They did give him 3 games grace to save his job. I'm so gutted and frustrated that that Gary has become so obstinate, the mcgills had to make this decision, the correct one imo and again I thank Gary for what he has done for the club. He was one of rhe best managers weve ever had and should have been at the club for a long time, but for his pigheadedness it wasn't to be. For the new man please can we continue to play football but in the meantime I don't care how we play until we are safe from the drop

Just shows how much some of the posters on here know about football!
Maybe we should all try giving the new gaffer a chance, and 110% backing from the stands, if ever our team needed a 12th player it's over the next few week.

WTF? Were you actually at the game? There was no abnormal wasting time. 3 subs per team, 30 secs each and 2mins for the needless bookings the ref dished out.

Wonder if this thread will hit the 300 mark before the new guy is installed tomorrow(following which expect another 3 figure plus response)?

Going to have to be somebody special to replace GM.Ok were in abit of trouble at the moment but Gary had the nack and a luck at crucial times in the season to win football matches.Just look at some of the lucky breaks we got last season.
You were like part of the furniture at the Crescent Gary and a new manager is going to be hard to take too.

The McGills will have been saddened to make this call BUT they have been strong and hopefully the decision will be justified. All managers are future ex-managers and Mills had a deam season last time round but this season has been found out.

Surprised no one has mentioned Nick Barmby on this thread. He is without a job, lives within an easy commute and keeps his hand in with a local team. Apparently one of his children is on the books at Man Utd and highly rated, Barnby has done some impromptu coaching there too. He would be a coup for sure and might even help bring in a few Man Utd loanees... Whoever comes in I hope with all my heart that they keep us up.... irrespective of the rights or wrongs of the sacking it was nice to hear it reported on national media last night rather than having to scratch around for news on the blue square website! when the seagulls follow the trawler its because they are waiting for sardines to be cast from the net,and must be ready to strike and pick there target.its the same way a good striker knows where the goal is and is ready to feed off any scraps that fall his way.jason walker you must always be ready to strike ..that means being in the position to gain your your catch.
