Manager Gary Mills backs York City to end their winless run
10:37pm Tuesday 26th February 2013 in Sport
By Dave Flett, Sports reporter
YORK City manager Gary Mills is backing his team to end their ten-game winless run after a 94th-minute equaliser denied them a first victory since New Year’s Day at Rotherham United.
Daniel Nardiello’s injury-time strike cancelled out Matty Blair’s earlier second-half effort to leave the Minstermen just four points above the npower League Two relegation zone.
But Mills is confident that his team will pull clear of the bottom two if they reproduce the form they showed at the Millers’ New York Stadium tonight.
The City boss said: “We all want that win but it wasn’t to be.
“It’s a hard one to take but, if we keep performing like that, it’s got to come.
“Football is about winning and we haven’t won enough but I don’t want anybody to be down.
“We’ve got to take a lot of heart from tonight’s performance.
“We’ve not had it easy over the last ten games but we will keep believing in how we play, which I think is the right way.
“I know if we play like we did against Rotherham that we will get the points to make sure we are playing in this division next season.”
On his team’s performance, Mills added: “We worked hard at Oxford and I felt we surpassed that tonight.
“Our shape, quality and discipline was excellent.
“You wondered with the run we are on whether what happened might happen when the board went up with five minutes and there were a few things we could have done better for their goal but it’s another draw away from home and, maybe, we would have taken that before the game but I thought we were different class to Rotherham.
“We were playing against a team that bang it forward and you have to deal with the second balls and the back four were outstanding in that respect.”
Blair was also on the scoresheet for the first time since New Year’s Day and Mills has been pleased with his return to an attacking midfield role, saying: “That position suits him with his energy.
“He got in on two occasions and we could have picked out some of his other runs as well.”

Have to agree with Dave 77 .............. major surgery is needed in the summer, and some brutal choices to make (not least in the Striker position)

Brutal choices? What, like actually having a striker?
It beggars belief

How many goals has he got in the last 3 seasons other than penalties - not many; something like 7 in his full season with City. Lacks ball control also and thus loses posession when used as a lone front man.

Nvertheless his value is in putting himself about and creating havoc for others to feed off, but only when he is in the mood for it. Could not get a regular game for Aldershot and Grimsby did not keep him on loan for long.
Not saying he will not be useful in the run in because of his attributes, albeit limited, but permanent signing as a striker no way!

I think (hope even) that we're heading for another draw against Bradford, but with any luck we can then get a couple of wins against the teams around us to pull us out of this mire.
we are in a dog fight now.we can't afford to lose again now.

A prime example is when we played Fleetwood at home. We had created about 10 chances by half time, not taken any and ended up getting beat. When we are on top in matches we need to score. We dont look like doing this with Walker up front on his own, however well he plays.

n I see your point, but surely we have to start somewhere. compare this performance to the trip to wycombe, which is by far the worst performance from a york side in about 4 years. last night we dominated from start to finish and but for a superb save by warrington that he tipped onto the bar from walker, and his save from blair, we'd have been out of sight.
for the first time in ages we were creating clear-cut chances and if you do create chances like that, the goals will come. most positive thing about the game last night was that all 3 front-men looked sharp and worked well together and all of them had chances.
lets hope that a jaded and disappointed bradford team struggle on our heavy pitch on saturday and we can nick a victory.

We have been absolutely toothless up front all season. I was a huge Mills fan, and still am. But last season the formation worked because the front 3 were all good enough to score goals and the midfield 3 also chipped in. This season has been a different kettle of fish and Paddy, Blair etc have found it much harder to score the same volume of goals meaning once the forwards stop contributing, we lose matches.
In my opinion, 2 up top is a must. Only my opinion though and I respect all other views!

old_school_minstermaI agree, we have been toothless up front for too long - but last night (I hope you'd agree) showed definite improvements in that regard. Not only did we finally score from open play, we created good chances and got in some decent shots on target. Not perfect by any means, but a significant improvement.

Walkers holding role leaves him running round in circles and getting the odd shot in, have you seen how many walker has scored this season ?, take away penalties and your about where Ranks is on goals scored, at least ranks has some weight and is able to fend off defenders which walker cant, Walker looses the ball as regularly as Ranks.
yet another bring him in and dont play him situation with GM, another waste of money if not being used, if we didnt need him in the 1st place why bring him in.
Also dont work on past figures or sucess, if we did that, Blair would of scored 15 by now, walker would of been on 15 we would be firmly in the play off places, and GM would be managing England
Just get real for gods sake

At 1-0, with a few minutes to go, why go defensive and play 4-6-0 with Rankine in midfield. Always going to concede when you do that. We should have been pushing for a second goal, but Mills is always happy with a draw.

We've done it before .....
No doubt we'll do it again, let's just hope it's not on Saturday.
But credit where credits due, City were magnificent last night.
To see the weight being lifted off Matty's shoulders when he celebrated
His goal in front of us, (after being thwarted by AW on his first one on one) was on it's own worth the £20 entrance fee.
One final note. .......My first ever visit to the NYS - Fantastic !!!
City bigwigs take note.

Torquay haven't entered to drop zone yet buy have now lost 6 on the bounce it's just unfortunate Wimbledon and Aldershot have started picking up points or we would probably be almost safe.
Penny for your thoughts Mr Chaiman because while Mill's position is debatable, what isn't debatable is that we need at least 14-15 new players in the summer to replace our non league one's who have tried and failed this season.
