GARY THORNTON would not be surprised to see Jack Briscoe make his Super League debut this year – but is hopeful of retaining him at York City Knights for the season.

The 21-year-old dual-reg Hull threequarter has been named in Premier Sports’ Kingstone Press Championship Team of the Week following his display in the Knights’ narrow loss to big-spending Halifax. The game was watched by Hull boss Peter Gentle.

Said York head coach Thornton: “He was okay at Batley and excellent on Sunday. That try was superb – you don’t see many centres beating their opposing centre before sprinting home from 40 metres. Defensively he’s coming on too.

“Peter Gentle commented on how well he played, so who’s to say he won’t make his (Hull) debut this year, but we’re more than pleased to have him.

“When you look at Hull’s squad, there are a few players in front of him so unless they get crippled with injuries I hope we have him for most of the season.”

Meanwhile, X-rays have shown Sam Scott, who came off against Fax, has no broken ribs, but remains doubtful for Friday’s match at former club Sheffield.
