‘We’re backing the boss’ says York City midfielder John McGrath
12:00pm Wednesday 20th February 2013 in Sport
By Dave Flett, Sports reporter
On-loan John McGrath has pledged his support to Gary Mills
ON-LOAN says John McGrath has confirmed that Gary Mills has the full support of his dressing room as he bids to turn around York City's fortunes.
The Bootham Crescent board have declared they are looking for an improvement in results following Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Barnet – the club’s eighth match without a win.
And McGrath, who also played under Mills at Tamworth, is adamant the City chief will meet that challenge, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Oxford United.
The former Doncaster midfielder, recruited from Burton by Mills, said: “There’s no doubt the gaffer is the right man for the job and he has the backing of all the lads.
“He’s one of the main reasons I came here. He’s a great bloke who’s very enthusiastic and losing will have hurt him as much as it did any York City player or fan on Saturday.
“He wears his heart on his sleeve and what the manager did last season to get York those two trophies was great. I know the fans are a bit upset and disappointed after the highs of last season but this is a hard division with some massive clubs, even ex-Premier League ones in it, and to finish third-bottom and stay up would represent a great season.
“If everybody sticks together, we should be okay.”
McGrath has signalled his commitment to the cause during his first two displays for the Minstermen and he has revealed he would also be ready to end five years with Burton, where he is still club captain, by making his switch to Bootham Crescent permanent in the summer.
He added: “I had a choice between sitting on the bench at Burton, coming on for ten minutes here and there and seeing my contract out, or coming to York so I jumped at the chance because I missed that Friday night buzz of preparing for a game. I would definitely be interested in joining permanently.
“I like how the team play football and I like the three men in midfield formation. We have a good squad.
“I’ve seen young Michael Potts in training and Paddy McLaughlin and they are fantastic players. I also live in Doncaster so the club is only 45 minutes away, which is ideal for me.
“I have young kids that I can take to school and pick up. I’m at a stage in my life where I am family orientated so somewhere three or four hours away from home does not interest me.
“But, that aside, this is a huge club whether they are playing in League One, League Two or the Conference. It’s a well-supported team that deserves success.”
McGrath also revealed he almost joined the Minstermen back in 2008 when then manager Colin Walker tried to sign him.
He stayed at Burton instead and played a major part in their subsequent Blue Square Premier title-winning campaign.
Recalling that decision, McGrath said: “I did come close to signing back then and spoke to Colin a couple of times.
“I get drawn into loyalty though and had been at Burton for a season and knew I was going to play. I probably would have at York as well but I made my choice.
“Out of courtesy, I rang the chairman Jason McGill at the time to thank him for the offer and he actually said I hope our paths cross again some day. It’s been a few years but they have crossed again and I’m really glad they have.”
Prior to his arrival at City, McGrath had not started a League game since snapping ligaments in his foot during a 2-0 defeat at Swindon last February but is confident that he has made a full recovery from the injury, saying: “My wife worries about the injury in the stands and tells me not to go into too many tackles but that’s how I play football.
“I can’t go in half-hearted. It’s all healed and I’m 100 per cent fit so, if something needs to be tackled, I will tackle it.”
Despite replacing the likes of David Ginola and Paul Merson during his days as a Premier League player at first club Aston Villa, McGrath also remains just as hungry for success a dozen years on.
He said: “It was fantastic to come over from Ireland at the age of 18 and join a club like Villa because somebody had seen something in you.
“It’s also great to be able to talk to my nine-year-old son now about playing in the Premier League.
“People ask me if I miss that but things happen for a reason. Perhaps I wasn’t quite good enough at the time or things went against me but I’m where I am now and I love doing what I do.
“I’ve been a professional footballer for 12 years and I have many more years in front of me. I’m 32 but I feel better now than I did when I was 26 or 27. I can still get around a pitch as I hope I have shown over the last two games.”

Has GM suddenly found out that he is a related to Douglas Craig or Barry Swallow as he is taking this club for a ride and it is spiralling out of control. I'm so glad that most of the fans have taken off their tinted spectacles and now recognise we are in a dog fight. We cannot continue living in the promotion year of last season and get to grips with this fast paced business that is cut throat to say the least. The Manager has to change to revitalise this squad with very low confidence.
Saturday was an absolute disgrace with Gary Mills' decisions. Time for a change or back to the Conference FACT.

Mills is without doubt the best manager we have had for years and he has turned the club round.
However he has to learn that sometimes he needs to switch tactics and formation as games progress.
If he can do that and the players treat every game like a Cup Final then we can survive this season , learn from our mistakes and use this season's experiences to improve in the future.
Get behind the lads and support the club at this difficult time

The common thread is the suggestion that the manager is a spent force, is no longer up to the job and is arrogent, refuses to consider a change of planand will not listen. These are serious criticisms indeed and things can not be allowed to go on like this.
It looks like there is a serious deficiency of communication and that what we need is some meaningful contact between Gary Mills and everybody out here, to clear the air and in an attempt to put our collective mind at rest.
If Gary really has the level of confidence he appears to have, then it should easily be within his ability to tell the fans exactly what his thinking is and why he is approaching the job in hand the way he is doing so and to answer their criticisms and queries. Genuine fans are certainly singing from the same sheet, but the difference between feeling involved and feeling alienated can be extremely small, especially during a downturn.
So, Gary, please share your thoughts with us, address us from the heart, meet with us, put our minds at rest, before the critics overwhelm us.

tactics got us out of Conference Hell, after all.
2. However, I do believe he needs to learn to swallow his pride and closely examine his tactics and selection policies. Admitting there's a problem is often a sign of strength, Gary, not weakness. I'm not arguing for 4-4-2 in every game, come hell or high water, just some indication that we can play a plan B when your chosen formation doesn't produce the goods, as has been the case more and more frequently in recent weeks, with outstanding results at Port Vale and Gillingham more than wiped out by humiliation at the hands of Wycombe and Barnet, for example.
3. I don't want Mills to go. I do want him to change tack. However, I fear that his "back me or sack me" message to the board earlier in the week may prove to be the rock that finally sinks him.
4. Whatever opinions I force on an unwilling public here or in the pub, at games I'll continue to get behind Gary and his team 100% - unity is strength.

With regards to your other, rather juvenile, point - this is a public forum and, like other posters, I shall post what I want when I want. If the reality doesn't match up to your fantasy you really do have some issues to address.

I just hope that long after McGrath has left we still have a football club (well a league one anyway). You keep posting about fans not coming but our average attendance is around 700 up on last season. Still, don't let the facts get in the way of a good rant.

We win more home games and we get more people thought the turnstiles, people want to watch a winning team. It's also massive for next season if we stay up because of the league ruling on percentage of turnover. It could be the difference between a top half playing budget or bottom half playing budget. On top of that I would suggest the poor home form could impact on season ticket sales.

That is indeed a good point crowds should be up more than 700 on average - we are in a higher division the away team bring many more fans than the handful that the conference teams (bar one or two) brought, perhaps that is proof that fans are not liking Mr Mills "play my way and lose tactics"?
Mills does seem tactically clueless this season and it seems his half time talks are designed to make the team play worse in the second half. Perhaps he is not cut out to be a league manager but a succesful non league boss?
Three matches coming up where we need results - defeat in all three SHOULD really be the end for Mills

However, can I congratulate Head of Bommer Command, Duffy and Old-Head on producing some intelligent, balanced and considered contributions. If only a filter system could be applied to the other often mind numbing contributions!
Tough game this weekend and 3 points are desperately needed... but that could apply to all the remaining games!

I simply cannot believe that any true York City fan wants to see Mills fail. He deserves our support but he seems determined to rub everyone up the wrong way. These are difficult times and he needs to learn from his mistakes and quickly.

I've not posted on here for a while as the comments often reflect our style of play this season... bemusing and lacking quality.

Not sure if he should stay or go at the moment but for gods sake some of the abuse is frankly embarrassing. The guy did a Wembley double and promotion, whatever happens he at least deserves a level of respect.
