‘We’re backing the boss’ says York City midfielder John McGrath

On-loan John McGrath has pledged his support to Gary Mills On-loan John McGrath has pledged his support to Gary Mills

ON-LOAN says John McGrath has confirmed that Gary Mills has the full support of his dressing room as he bids to turn around York City's fortunes.

The Bootham Crescent board have declared they are looking for an improvement in results following Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Barnet – the club’s eighth match without a win.

And McGrath, who also played under Mills at Tamworth, is adamant the City chief will meet that challenge, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Oxford United.

The former Doncaster midfielder, recruited from Burton by Mills, said: “There’s no doubt the gaffer is the right man for the job and he has the backing of all the lads.

“He’s one of the main reasons I came here. He’s a great bloke who’s very enthusiastic and losing will have hurt him as much as it did any York City player or fan on Saturday.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve and what the manager did last season to get York those two trophies was great. I know the fans are a bit upset and disappointed after the highs of last season but this is a hard division with some massive clubs, even ex-Premier League ones in it, and to finish third-bottom and stay up would represent a great season.

“If everybody sticks together, we should be okay.”

McGrath has signalled his commitment to the cause during his first two displays for the Minstermen and he has revealed he would also be ready to end five years with Burton, where he is still club captain, by making his switch to Bootham Crescent permanent in the summer.

He added: “I had a choice between sitting on the bench at Burton, coming on for ten minutes here and there and seeing my contract out, or coming to York so I jumped at the chance because I missed that Friday night buzz of preparing for a game. I would definitely be interested in joining permanently.

“I like how the team play football and I like the three men in midfield formation. We have a good squad.

“I’ve seen young Michael Potts in training and Paddy McLaughlin and they are fantastic players. I also live in Doncaster so the club is only 45 minutes away, which is ideal for me.

“I have young kids that I can take to school and pick up. I’m at a stage in my life where I am family orientated so somewhere three or four hours away from home does not interest me.

“But, that aside, this is a huge club whether they are playing in League One, League Two or the Conference. It’s a well-supported team that deserves success.”

McGrath also revealed he almost joined the Minstermen back in 2008 when then manager Colin Walker tried to sign him.

He stayed at Burton instead and played a major part in their subsequent Blue Square Premier title-winning campaign.

Recalling that decision, McGrath said: “I did come close to signing back then and spoke to Colin a couple of times.

“I get drawn into loyalty though and had been at Burton for a season and knew I was going to play. I probably would have at York as well but I made my choice.

“Out of courtesy, I rang the chairman Jason McGill at the time to thank him for the offer and he actually said I hope our paths cross again some day. It’s been a few years but they have crossed again and I’m really glad they have.”

Prior to his arrival at City, McGrath had not started a League game since snapping ligaments in his foot during a 2-0 defeat at Swindon last February but is confident that he has made a full recovery from the injury, saying: “My wife worries about the injury in the stands and tells me not to go into too many tackles but that’s how I play football.

“I can’t go in half-hearted. It’s all healed and I’m 100 per cent fit so, if something needs to be tackled, I will tackle it.”

Despite replacing the likes of David Ginola and Paul Merson during his days as a Premier League player at first club Aston Villa, McGrath also remains just as hungry for success a dozen years on.

He said: “It was fantastic to come over from Ireland at the age of 18 and join a club like Villa because somebody had seen something in you.

“It’s also great to be able to talk to my nine-year-old son now about playing in the Premier League.

“People ask me if I miss that but things happen for a reason. Perhaps I wasn’t quite good enough at the time or things went against me but I’m where I am now and I love doing what I do.

“I’ve been a professional footballer for 12 years and I have many more years in front of me. I’m 32 but I feel better now than I did when I was 26 or 27. I can still get around a pitch as I hope I have shown over the last two games.”

Gary Mills instruction to John McGrath....."John, do some PR please as part of your loan deal - talk to the Press and say you are all in support of me and agree with everything I do including playing 5-4-1 which I tell the fans is 4-3-3"

Has GM suddenly found out that he is a related to Douglas Craig or Barry Swallow as he is taking this club for a ride and it is spiralling out of control. I'm so glad that most of the fans have taken off their tinted spectacles and now recognise we are in a dog fight. We cannot continue living in the promotion year of last season and get to grips with this fast paced business that is cut throat to say the least. The Manager has to change to revitalise this squad with very low confidence.
Saturday was an absolute disgrace with Gary Mills' decisions. Time for a change or back to the Conference FACT.

When the going gets tough it is time for everyone to stick together and support the management and team.
Mills is without doubt the best manager we have had for years and he has turned the club round.
However he has to learn that sometimes he needs to switch tactics and formation as games progress.
If he can do that and the players treat every game like a Cup Final then we can survive this season , learn from our mistakes and use this season's experiences to improve in the future.
Get behind the lads and support the club at this difficult time

Agreed Mickey T. Lets support the manager and the team as we navigate this bad patch. We have had more than our fair share of bad luck this season and this WILL turn. Keep positve and focus on success and not creating negative energy that is completly counter productive. As McGrath says we have a good team and gave Burton a great game recently. Many on here are saying we won't go down but how many more winless games can we take before it gets too late? I think we need to win 1 of the next 3 games to get some confidence back.

Agreed, no-one wants him to fail but there is a decision to be made about how long you allow a failing approach to continue:

No away win since December
No home win since 1st Jan
1 win in the last eleven
4 pts from the last 8 games
1 pt from the last 4...

When do you say enough is enough and take it out of his hands if he won't change?

I've read many of the disgruntled comments from fans, following the most recent defeat at the hands of lowly Barnet and it seems that within the last month or two the wheels are in danger of coming off.
The common thread is the suggestion that the manager is a spent force, is no longer up to the job and is arrogent, refuses to consider a change of planand will not listen. These are serious criticisms indeed and things can not be allowed to go on like this.
It looks like there is a serious deficiency of communication and that what we need is some meaningful contact between Gary Mills and everybody out here, to clear the air and in an attempt to put our collective mind at rest.
If Gary really has the level of confidence he appears to have, then it should easily be within his ability to tell the fans exactly what his thinking is and why he is approaching the job in hand the way he is doing so and to answer their criticisms and queries. Genuine fans are certainly singing from the same sheet, but the difference between feeling involved and feeling alienated can be extremely small, especially during a downturn.
So, Gary, please share your thoughts with us, address us from the heart, meet with us, put our minds at rest, before the critics overwhelm us.

I think GM will get 2 more games to improve things. Change of tactics may or may not help but he seems to set in his 4-5-1 / 4-3-3 that worked so well last season and failure to switch may be his own downfall plus challenging the board with the 'back me or sack me' quote will not help his cause.

Fat Harry says...
3:28pm Wed 20 Feb 13

1. The extended rough patch we're enduring doesn't mean all the Mills-knockers were right all along. His signings/selections/
tactics got us out of Conference Hell, after all.

2. However, I do believe he needs to learn to swallow his pride and closely examine his tactics and selection policies. Admitting there's a problem is often a sign of strength, Gary, not weakness. I'm not arguing for 4-4-2 in every game, come hell or high water, just some indication that we can play a plan B when your chosen formation doesn't produce the goods, as has been the case more and more frequently in recent weeks, with outstanding results at Port Vale and Gillingham more than wiped out by humiliation at the hands of Wycombe and Barnet, for example.

3. I don't want Mills to go. I do want him to change tack. However, I fear that his "back me or sack me" message to the board earlier in the week may prove to be the rock that finally sinks him.

4. Whatever opinions I force on an unwilling public here or in the pub, at games I'll continue to get behind Gary and his team 100% - unity is strength.

A lot sense in what DavidBu says. We all need to stay positive and support the team and the manager BUT it has to be a 2 way street to keep the fans onboard. Millsy if you read this board please thinkabout this point as together we can succeed but in isolation we won't. Talk to us and communicate. Bottom line is results do need to change and YOU are reponsible. Just manage to win irresspective of how and get some points on the board. We have a lot of fickle fan but we all want you to succeed. Surely he has had the respect but the party's over. Lets stick with him because of last season. No, the future of the club is more important than one bloke. This club has continued to move backwards, this time move it forward. There are 13 clubs in the premier league who I have seen play York in league games and many more who reached the premier who also played York in league games. No room for sentiments.

Mad for minstermen certainly not arthurian but entertained by your musings. Glad we can all beg to differ. Disappointed rather than disgruntled with the situation but i realised some seasons back not to take footie too seriously,it is an industry now nothing else.

If this is true, and Millsy decides to accept an offer
(and who could blame him)
We should all hang our heads in shame.
Arrogant, stubborn, single minded, .....
Yes maybe, but he is also principled and a Gentleman to know.

I thought the season was made up of 46 games? So, whatever happens on Saturday, there will be another 12 games left to play, another 36 points available. There's still a long way to go and, among our remaining fixtures, we have Accrington, Bristol Rovers, Wimbledon, Torquay and Dagenham - it is still on our own hands. But because I'm being objective and not panicking, some idiots will say I'm a 'happy clapper'.
Yep, you're a happy clapper !!!
I am pleased and proud to be one if it means I can remain objective, think for myself and be positive about the club I support.

I'm certainly not saying we should stick with him regardless, Christ I've had a go at him enough over the last couple of years and dont agree with too much he has done this season, and have generally being seen as a glass half empty poster anyway. However for what he has done for the club he will always have my gratitude and respect and I just don't see the need for some of the abusive comments. Two or three more poor results and I think that will probably be it but he should still go with our thanks not ridicule.

You keep posting about fans not coming but our average attendance is around 700 up on last season. Still, don't let the facts get in the way of a good rant.
Whichever way you look at it, 2500 on Tuesday and 3500 on Saturday is a big drop on what we should be getting but the Mills effect is keeping fans away. Anyway, go and bother somebody else.
So how many should be coming to watch? Our average last season was around 3,120. When we won the 4th Division title we only averaged a touch over 5,000. We struggled to take 8,000 to Wembley for the POF last May. Other than the occasional cup game we have never been a well supported club. That is the reality. It's not Mills's fault, the McGills fault, that's just how it is in York. With regards to your other, rather juvenile, point - this is a public forum and, like other posters, I shall post what I want when I want. If the reality doesn't match up to your fantasy you really do have some issues to address.

It's very odd that you (and others) fail to understand that a lot of supporters are not coming to matches because of the home form (I know at least 10 people who've been put off) - if you don't understand that it can't be explained to you - Doh! An extra few hundred bums on seats at home games = more income. Why is it that you and your ilk choose to distort facts backed up by an irrelevant example. Finally, I will only ever hand out an insult (in jest of course) if somebody has insulted me first (I think they call it an eye for an eye). Now jog on young man.

We win more home games and we get more people thought the turnstiles, people want to watch a winning team. It's also massive for next season if we stay up because of the league ruling on percentage of turnover. It could be the difference between a top half playing budget or bottom half playing budget. On top of that I would suggest the poor home form could impact on season ticket sales.

Mills and McGrath are obviously close so it would be concerning if he said anything other than that! However it's the results that do the talking and I genuinely feel Saturday will be crunch time for Mills so if the players are behind him they best pull their fingers out!

That is indeed a good point crowds should be up more than 700 on average - we are in a higher division the away team bring many more fans than the handful that the conference teams (bar one or two) brought, perhaps that is proof that fans are not liking Mr Mills "play my way and lose tactics"?

Mills does seem tactically clueless this season and it seems his half time talks are designed to make the team play worse in the second half. Perhaps he is not cut out to be a league manager but a succesful non league boss?

Three matches coming up where we need results - defeat in all three SHOULD really be the end for Mills

I've not posted on here for a while as the comments often reflect our style of play this season... bemusing and lacking quality.

However, can I congratulate Head of Bommer Command, Duffy and Old-Head on producing some intelligent, balanced and considered contributions. If only a filter system could be applied to the other often mind numbing contributions!

Tough game this weekend and 3 points are desperately needed... but that could apply to all the remaining games!

we don't want to see mills fail we just want him to put out a team that can be competertive and look like they at least want to win, then if they go down fighting they can still walk off the pitch with their heads up, instead of looking at their boots.
