York City pegged back by Gillingham in npower League Two

YORK City were denied victory by a late goal at promotion-chasing Gillingham in npower League Two.

Coventry loan striker Cody McDonald snatched a 1-1 draw for the Gills in the 85th minute after the Minstermen had led for the majority of the match.

The visitors took the lead in the 17th minute at the Priestfield Stadium when Gillingham's Charlie Lee turned Paddy McLaughlin's corner into his own net.

City skipper Chris Smith saw his header from another McLaughlin corner hit a post, while York 'keeper Michael Ingham was called into action to keep the Gills at bay.

The draw, the Minstermen's 13th of the campaign, leaves Gary Mills' men in 15th place in the League Two table.

Good performance, and a result we would all have been happy with before the game. Shame we couldn't hold onto the lead, we're only 6 points off the play-offs as it is, would have been 4 had we won! But never mind, plenty of games left yet to string a few wins together and keep things interesting.

Sounds like we had many chances and could of been 3 or 4 1 in the end to City...Not played off the park again by lets be right another a team that are looking for promotion out of div 2. We just need to find some consistancy and go on a little run of games and give moral another massive boost.....KEEP THE FAITH

Its all very well getting away draws but when we play our best football away for single points and struggle at home for anything, then we should be looking behind us in the table not ahead. Most of the teams behind us are looking ahead and picking up 3 points to our one. The gap narrows after every game.

Can't agree with that, we should never be looking over our shoulders at the teams behind us. What would be the point in that? We might as well write the season off already with that stance. We're actually closer to getting automatic promotion than we are to the relegation zone - why not look upwards?!

city played 10 man Gillingham most 2nd half mills refused to bring on striker to win game sick of him happy with drawn games now 13 not good enough give the new lads a chance rodman walker and blair not good enough for lge 2.

For me these are very good away points although obviously its a shame we could not hold on. The challenge is to improve the home form and on the back of the away results that would see us moving up the table.

I was there today and thought we were excellent for much of the game and unlucky not to win. All the players put a lot of effort in, closing down and tracking back - a lot of hard work paid off with a good point away but sadly couldn't quite hold on for the win. Ingham made a couple of great saves, but Smith hit the post as well. If we can convert some of the chances we create when playing well and passing it around we'll head up the table. But still think we need a strong, fast, physically imposing striker to give defences problems... anyway, great effort today.

Kirbylad, the Gills are where they are for a reason when City are at the races they play some great stuff but the cutting edge we require is unaffordable GM is doing the best he can with the resources available, even promising conference players are beyond our means.
So unless you win big on the lottery just try to understand what GM is trying to do with his wheat & chaff & at the end of the day enjoy the journey isn't Danny a good player try to see the positives Matty has pace to burn & when Chambers is fit we will have options in attack one good striker will not get us to the top but a contribution from all areas in the team will Cmon City!!

Its obviously disappointing to get pegged back after leading for so long. But everybody would have taken a point at Gillingham before the game started. It is just being able to kill the opposiion off when we are leading, that we need to master. Three points bounce you up the league, but one point usually leaves you in the same position. Its going to be one of those seasons when we have to scrap for every single point..

Just been to "Kent on Line " (Gillinghams equivolent to this site) Gosh, the comments of the fans towards their team are worse than some of ours about City. Overall, it seems that most supporters of all clubs are the same.

Those are not very good odds at all Bill. Given that we are badly in need of someone to convert our chances into goals and that we struggle to keep clean sheets. I would give us no more than a 15/1 or 20/1 chance of being in the play offs. Unless of course we manage to sign Messi or Rooney. I think half way will be a good finish this season.

Their player lee went off after clash of heads with concussion came back on 3 times so yes played 10 men.We have no cutting edge no win in 7 games.Hope new strikers are not bench warmers.

We appear to be the very definition of a mid-table team (frankly I'd take that in our first season back). But with a genuine 20-goal striker (a proper centre forward or a goal poacher (or both), we would be table toppers. I liked the look of Coulson early in the season. Is he out for the duration? One more thing ... what happened to all that fab football we were playing early last season? Was that a fluke?

Coulson is now hoping to be back before the end of the season. The football is down to the quality of the oposition, its a step up and teams now know if they close us down we struggle. If you look back at the first half of the season teams were giving us way too much space but managers learnt from that and it changed as the season went on. Thats why we ended up letting Boucade go, he became less effective when closed down.
I don't believe Mills has changed his philosophy at all, he just does not have enough quality at this level to dominate as we did at times last season.

GM can really call this a big point! Though The Gills home form has been a bit rocky of late, we have done very well to take something from what is a tough place. We now need to start getting into the right frame of mind for our remaining home fixtures(together with taking chances that come our way) because if we can start picking-up the points at BC, our away form is very much holding-up and is likely to look after itself. If we can do this, starting with what will be a tough match next Saturday against Morecambe, then, who knows where it will take us!! COYR.

Great point - for 85 minutes we had our noses in front, could/should have been at least 2-0 up before they scored. The back four looked solid - Dan P switching to left back diid a sterling job, must be a managers dream to have such a player - bit like a Paul Madeley in the Leeds side - always gives 110% for the team. Kerr getting back to his best - for his effort, drive and marshalling of those around him - would be my man of the match. Ingham two fantastic saves - one world class in the first half. Sorry to see Lanre leave the field, lump on his head following the clash with Lee - OK they took Lee off for about four minutes and were down to ten men - how does that become almost half the second half? Ten minutes each way !!! Overall, glad I cleared six inches of snow - battled through the conditions to witness the performance - bring on Morecombe.
Spoke to a couple of Grimsby fans in Cambridge - Brodie, overweight and lazy,not worth his place in the side - interesting

Another fine performance against a top of the table side. Our away form is promotion form and box to box no team is better than us but we just don't convert enough of our chances. Home form is letting us down unfortunately and clearly we've missed our best striker, Ash Chambers, these last few weeks. If we can get him back playing sooner rather than later then the play offs may be a possibility still.

It was a very good performance against a strong team and vociferous home crowd. We dominated much of the game and should have had a penalty and straight red for the challenge on Blair. Spineless ref and linesman throughout.

Gillingham like many in this league were a strong,long ball outfit. I'd rather watch our style of football every week.

We do need another striker to feed off Walkers trickery though. He worked really hard yesterday but too often there is no one else in the box when he is creating space for others outside the area.

I think it is time Danny P played striker come on Mr Mills you play him everywhere else he shouldnt be played and he doesnt disappoint you. Maybe he could be the hold up player with Walker playing off him with his face to goal!

This was the first game we'd managed to see since that abysmal 0-0 at Southend, when City were one dimentional and poor for 90 mins.
Gillingham was an interesting and quite exciting game, particularly when looking back at it, for there was so much frustration for the York fans.
The first half was poor; there was plenty of good stuff but it was fragmented and the game only got going in the second period.
It wasn't a case of York's missed chances; rather several inventive and thrilling episodes where our players couldn't quite get the shot in, including the clear penalty denied in the last minute.
When we started to pass it around slickly after halftime even the Gillingham fans started to be impressed and the more easiily City were able to keep it flowing the easier they got the ball back after losing it.
In the first half York started to boot the ball upfield after a few moments and were geting nowhere for long periods. Even into the second half there was a succession of over-long and over-hard passes into the Gillingham area with no York player up front. I couldn't decide whether this was a plan badly conceived or gone wrong or a string of coincidental errors! Until they started to show their stuff, I hardly recognised the side.
I was again, however, impressed with Walker. Time after time his little touches, hold ups and lay offs were inch perfect and one feels that with the right combination he'll, once again, be a match winner. Maybe that combination hasn't been signed to the club yet.
Someone has mentioned Ingham's two saves, one in each half. The first was probably the better, but either probably merited the ticket price. Two saves like that in the one match must be a rarity.
I don't know when I'll get to see the side again, but I shall be willing them on from various exotic parts in the next few weeks.

While I'm not the Parslow hater many are we need a new left back. Blanchett was supposed to be the replacement for Meredith and when that failed to work out Fyfield was the short term alternative. As much as he has done " ok" it's not the long term answer as has been seen as the season has progressed. Danny is not a natural left footed player so we are back to looking again.

Seven more wins ??? Don't think a team with 50+ points will be in a relegation battle!!!! Where almost on last years relegation points total already and six points off the play offs so I for one are looking upwards, think this Jarvis could be a find if we sign him!!!!

I think dropping Fyfield, letting Blanchett go and Playing Parslow at left back sends out a huge message that Mills will certainly be interested in taking it further

Ye I did read that, I have a feeling if Mr Mills wants him we will do the deal. Time is running out to bring that left back in unless he decides to stick with Parslow but I don't see it. Other than that I think we are probably finished with our recruitment drive. The only other thing I see happening is Reed getting fixed up.

Yes agree but gary mills told me he had his way of playing and would never sign a big centre forward.I said good idea to have plan b.City fans are used to having a big player up front i.e Keith Walwyn but he said no.Can my info be checked that he played a big striker called gayle 6ft 3in at his beloved Tamworth.Yes we play great football but just want a player to get on end of crosses and unsettle big defenders so our small forwards can score more goals.
