York Indoor Bowls Club ladies showed they are the best team in the north of England as they beat South Shields in the last 16 of the Yetton Trophy.

They will now play the current holders Lincoln in the quarter final next Thursday. The South Shields fixture looked to be a tricky game on paper after they had disposed of Cumbria in the previous round but York won all four rinks, pulling away from an aggregate 19-19 score line after five ends to 46-32 five ends later then 71-54 after 15 and an eventual winning margin of 101-73.

At home, Carol Instone’s team trailed 4-3 after five ends before winning seven on the trot to lead 18-4, which proved to be too much as the game ended 26-12.

Melanie Brooke’s side were 10-8 down after eight ends but bounced back in style with a six, another six, then two singles to lead 22-10. They held the lead through to the 28-23 finish.

Away, Helen Walker’s side were level at 14-14 with six ends to play before scoring a five, then a three, to give themselves a cushion. A single, then a two on the last two ends, gave the York team a 22-17 victory.

Linda Harrison’s spectacular unbeaten run continued as her team came from 13-11 down to lead 22-13 with four ends to play. Despite dropping a six and two singles they did enough to finally prevail 25-21.
