WETHERBY Racecourse has been forced to abandon tomorrow’s jumps meeting due to cold snap.

The majority of sporting events in the region have fallen foul of the wintry weather over the weekend, and the race meeting joined the lengthy list of postponements after an inspection yesterday morning.

The track was covered in snow and still frozen, with the two-day forecast offering no cause for optimism.

Clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson said: “The snow is not going to shift and there is more on its way. It was a fairly easy decision and there was no point in prolonging the agony.”

York Knavesmire Harriers were forced to cancel their annual Brass Monkey Half-marathon yesterday as parts of the course were unfit.

All games in rugby union’s Northern Divisions were called off, while there were no amateur rugby league games played in the Pennine League.

Football was also badly affected, with a whiteout in the Evo-Stik League, the Northern Counties East League, the York Minster Engineering League and the newitts.com Beckett League.
