York City sign striker Ben Everson
12:00pm Wednesday 16th January 2013 in Sport
By Dave Flett, Sports reporter
STRIKER Ben Everson has passed up an opportunity to play Europa League football to sign for York City.
Middlesbrough-born Everson helped Icelandic top-flight team Breidablik qualify for next season’s UEFA tournament during the Nordic country’s 2012 campaign that ended in September.
The 25-year-old, who plays as an orthodox centre forward, joined Breidablik from second-tier side Tindastoll, having previously played university football in the United States for West Texas A&M University but, according to City boss Gary Mills, he is now determined to be successful in his homeland.
About his first signing in the January transfer window, Mills said: “He’s a good player who has been with us for a month, but we’ve kept things quiet to see how he did.
“He’s got better and better in that time and done very well, so we have taken him until the end of the season and are hoping to get international clearance in time for Saturday’s home game against Aldershot.
“He likes to score goals and has done that wherever he’s been. He works very hard and gets in good areas.
“He’s hungry and has the desire to do well.
“He could have carried on playing in Iceland’s top division and in the Europa League but he wants to make a name for himself over here.”
But the League of Ireland trialists Mills was hoping to run the rule over during a reserve friendly at Sunderland today will not get the chance to impress after the game was frozen off.
On that disappointment, the City chief added: “The game’s off, which is a bit of a blow for us because we’ve had the Irish lads over and it’s possibly been the worst week to do that weather wise because it’s been difficult to train but you can’t dictate nature.
“We’ve organised a game against Scunthorpe for next Tuesday and I’m hoping they can play in that.
“I know all about them anyway but, ideally, you want to look at them in a match situation.”
The match would have also represented a chance for defender Chris Doig and striker Oli Johnson to get game time after recovering from their respective ankle and groin injuries.
Centre-back David McGurk, meanwhile, has not trained since being stretchered off with a neck injury at Cheltenham on Saturday but Mills remains optimistic that he will be fit for the weekend.
The City manager added that there had been no further inquiries about Jamie Reed since his transfer request and also revealed that he has not yet begun talks with any of his players who will be out of contract at the end of the season.
Under the Bosman ruling, any player in that position is now free to talk to other teams about their plans for next season but Mills said: “I’m not looking at that now.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do this season and all our effort has to be focused on getting points in this division to see where that takes us.
“I’m trying to improve the squad with a couple of signings if I can to take us until the end of this season and I have no thoughts on talking about next season.”

Suspect having played in Iceland he'll have no problems playing on waterlogged heavier pitches. Mind may insist on a thermal bath and sauna afterwards?

Well this lad has not played at a very high level of football, so we will just have to wait and see. Now is not the time to pass judgement on him. This will either be a stroke of genius by Gary Mills, or just another duff signing.

Mills will only brig in better than what we have? Then why a 5 a side player on short term till end of the season?
Just play Reed and Walker together in a 442 with Blair on the wing Rodman on the other after Aldershot and reap the rewards!

Give the guy a chance, he is only signed to the end of season so it is not another hendo situation. We do need cover if reed wants away, he will go at the end of the season whatever on a free, so we might as well get some cash now.

It would have sat more comfortably if Gary just said either we couldn't compete financially or acknowledged he lost out due to indecision.
The reality is that we might need to rake a punt on a few unknowns to turn up a gem. Good luck to the lad and apologies to you if you are reading this. It's just that we have had quite a few very poor signings alongside some very good ones in the past couple of years.

Lets assume Mr Mills has a lot of contacts in the game...Everson was recommended to Mills...Mills invites him to train with the squad and thinks he is worth a short term contract.
What on earth could possibly be wrong with that?

An old item from borofutsal.com:
Ben Everson has left Middlesbrough and returned to Texas, USA, where he will continue his degree and play in the NCAA Soccer Championship for West Texas University. He made two appearances for Boro, scoring six goals, helping the team to record two wins and go top of the FA Futsal League North.
Everson has often stated that he would rather play futsal than football and is interested in a move to Italy to play alongside former teammate Matthew Wootton and his manager Damon Shaw has no doubt he has the ability to play at the top. "Ben has bags of ability, and with regular futsal training he could become a world class player. If he plays regularly I have no doubt he would be in the England team and could play in the Division de Honor or Serie A.

I support Gary Mills but there is something odd about turning down the opportunity to sign Brodie and then signing a lad with virtually no experience of league football in this country.

Have to disagree with your opinion on him not being suited to a return. He was on GM's radar but we missed out to Grimsby who were more decisive.
He's divided opinion on Grimsby fans forum after two matches but that's Brodie. People seem to either love him or hate him. I personally had a lot of time for him and 37 goals in his last season at City were evidence of his ability. It will be a long time before we have anyone that prolific again.

I think wages weren't a problem with Brodie's possible return. It's just that Grimsby stepped in first while Mills was pondering over a decision. He was all set to sign if he had been offered terms sooner. However, good luck to the new lad. We shouldn't pass comment until we've seen him.

"...the team has stabilised itself in recent years as a real challenger in the Icelandic top flight. As current cup holders, Breiðablik competed in a European competition for the first time in 2010, facing Scottish Premier League side Motherwell in the Europa League. They lost the first leg 1–0 in Scotland, and lost by the same scoreline in the return leg..."
So that puts them a bit worse than Motherwell which leaves them a bit better than York City. Also, a US college team is a great place to learn the game; very good coaching physically and mentally.
Give him a chance. He may turn out to be very good by division 4 standards.

Mills has signed some horrific players (through form or injury or both):
Blinkhorn, Ashikodi, Dobie, Eugen Bopp, Doig (in my opinion as I dont rate him), Oli Johnson, Danny Blanchett, resigning a past it Bullock being the main ones that spring to mind. They wont have been playing for free either, so when it comes to wages so much budget has been wasted historically.
I'm a big fan of Reedy though but he doesn't want to give him a sniff. Which if you look at his history of excluding players it has proved him to be wrong, McGurk has been top drawer since his recall, Potts has done a good job since coming in too. Perhaps if Reedy had ever had a decent run of games we could have known for sure if he was good enough to play in any formation or not :(

On reedy, he just doesn't fit our system, which is a shame cos I like the guy, but changing a successful system (in my opinion mid table is successful) to accommodate one player isn't a good idea. Everson seems to be a much better fit looking at that video

He has spent the first 6 months of this season on loan at Morecambe, scoring 6 goals in 27 appearances, but has been beset by "anger management" issues according to their manager. He has signed a loan deal with Grimsby for the rest of this season. His parent club remains Crawley Town. The former Crawley manager, Steve Evans, has made a number of disparaging comments about RB and has made no effort to take him to Rotherham.
i disagree regarding Brodie being a one season wonder tho its academic now,but re his time at Crawley in league two there wasnt any time at Crawley in league two he was farmed out to the other money bags loaded with strikers Fleetwood and at Morecambe he had a better strike rate than most of the players constantly touted on here,Brodies not good enough for us Reedys not good enough for us i think we need to get used to the fact Messi isnt gonna be coming here.we arnt exactly overloaded with great forewards even if Everson turns out to be one of our better ones there really ought to be enough scope to give such as Reed more game time.does anybody seriously think johnson is going to kick a ball in anger for us it should be the likes of him we are waving goodbye to not Jamie Reed.

Both players suffered injury and it must be very frustrating for them, especially Johnson.
But it doesn't make them bad players.
If a supporter trips and sprains his ankle on the way to the match and has to go home, does that make him a bad supporter?

I find it incredible that some people are critical of Mills for his signings such as Eugen Bopp an Oli Johnson. chalkytalky wrote: Hopefully he will be a bit of a gem but I have to be honest and say i'm not convinced. Mills has signed some horrific players (through form or injury or both): Blinkhorn, Ashikodi, Dobie, Eugen Bopp, Doig (in my opinion as I dont rate him), Oli Johnson, Danny Blanchett, resigning a past it Bullock being the main ones that spring to mind. Perhaps if Reedy had ever had a decent run of games we could have known for sure if he was good enough to play in any formation or not :(Mills never signs good players? What about Jason Walker, Matty Blair and Ashley Chambers, Paddy McLaughlin, Jon Challinor and Lanre Oyebanjo. All in one summer! At our level, every signing is a risk when you’re looking for the next Tony Canham, Andy McMillan, Martyn Woolford or Wayne Hall.
He signed Reedy who is a good one for starters. So I know he does sign some good gems (although he doesnt fancy him in the team).
Chambers and McLaughlin are good examples as they were 'unknowns', we all knew about Walker, Blair and Lanre from playing against conference teams.
I missed Henderson off my list of bads ones too haha.
What my point was that he has signed some bad (known and unknown) players and i'm not convinced by his record at signing players. If you look at the ratio more than half the players he signs have been duds. Not a great ratio :(
