IT Sports Wigginton opened 2013 with a crucial 3-2 success at Chapel Allerton in the Yorkshire Squash League premier division.

Manager Ian Tooms hailed an “important victory”, adding that two more wins were likely to guarantee top-flight squash next season for the newly-promoted club.

Number five Jon Duffield got Wigginton off to a flying start, beating Carrie Ramsey 3-1.

The same scoreline was repeated by number four Simon Myring to see off John Hanson.

Josh Harris, at number three, was then involved in an ugly encounter as he lost 3-1 to Niall McKinnon, and Wiggy number one Pete Bilson lost 3-0 to former world number three Simon Parke, who hails from Knaresborough.

The deciding contest saw America-based Neil Cordell, playing his first game of the season for Wigginton, edge beyond Dominic Hamilton 3-1.

Wigginton’s city rivals, Dunnington, are second in the table, 17 points behind leaders Queens.
