York City lose 2-1 at home to Exeter City
5:26pm Saturday 5th January 2013 in Sport
TWO slip-ups cost York City dearly as they went down 2-1 at home to Exeter City in npower League Two.
The Minstermen, seeking a third successive home victory, made a lively start at Bootham Crescent and carved out a series of early openings.
However, the Grecians forged ahead with a breakaway goal after the hosts lost possession on halfway in the 14th minute. Following some desperate lunges from York defenders, home forward Alex Rodman put through his own net trying to scramble the ball clear.
The lead lasted only five minutes as midfielder Michael Potts stabbed the ball past former York loan 'keeper Artur Krysiak following a good Minstermen move.
The visitors made the better start to the second half and regained the lead eight minutes in when Scott Kerr's pass across the back put Jamal Fyfield under pressure, allowing Exeter to create an opening for Jimmy Keohane to score.
The defeat means York slip a place to 15th in the npower League Two table ahead of next Saturday's trip to Cheltenham Town.

Second half I thought we were fairly average and looked like we had run out of steam and ideas of how to score.
I dont like to single anyout out for a bad game but to me Fyfield looked at best, off the pace and at worst a liability on a couple of occasions during the game so I was relieved when he was taken off. Perhaps he is ill or carrying a knock but he looked knackered to me.
Anyway we move on, in my mind this season was always going to be tough and we are about where I thought we would be. Still look forward to each game! Lets win our next one!

Wrong result but entertaining all the same, what we watch football for drama, effort and some really good stuff for large parts of the game from city. Just reset for the next one keep plugging away. Any signing rumours as we have vacancies?

A decent game which in fairness, we deserved a draw from. One of those days at the office. Unlucky from Rodman who did very well to get back just unlucky to put it in the net. Wont hold it against Kerr for giving the ball away as he is usually solid in the middle. As for Fyfield, never been a fan of him and still arent. Fair enough hes young and time to learn but made a couple of clumsy mistakes today, one costing us a goal. We are missing Meredith in that position and feel a decent left back is needed in the transfer window.
Great first half performance but as usual when the opposition starts pressing us the team get nervous, then the crowd get nervous and stop offering any encouragement. Really disappointing and just reinforces the fact we need something different up front. Good to hear mills was at least thinking about Brodie, it at least shows he's thinking along the right lines

I just dont think hes brilliant at left back. could have easily been sent off last week and this week he had a bad game. lets hope he proves me wrong next time he plays.

We dominated play in the first half and whilst we were less effective in the 2nd half we could have scored when Blair was through with just goalie to beat but he sliced it wide. They were a decent side but we made mistakes for both their goals. Defence were solid except for a below par Fyfield and TY was very good. Signs in last 3 home games are much better and we move on with optimism COYR
The first half we were easily the better team and Exeter were fortunate to go in for half time at 1-1. But they soon got the measure of us, and Exeter were by far the better team in the second half. Our neat little triangle passing game got us nowhere, and as soon as we lost posession, it was obvious that they were going to punish us. I looked over at the City management team when Exeter scored their second goal, they were furious with Jamile Fyfield, and he was hauled off minutes later. I heard Gary Mills post match interview, while driving home, he said that we were unlucky to end up with nothing, but I think that we got what we deserved. A game of football lasts for at least 90 minutes, but once again City have only put in half a shift. Gary Mills did say that Alex Rodman was staying until the end of the season, I hope that he is not going to be our only signing.

I watched the same game as OLD-HEAD. First half we were OK, second half we just gave the ball away too much. Fyfield was not to blame for the second goal, it was the poor ball from Kerr that put him in trouble. Another home defeat, slightly worrying.
And why wait until 5 minutes from time to bring on Reedy when Walker was contributing virtually nothing for the whole second half.

Rodman's was a fluke which came because he was desperate to get back and help the defence. If he hadn't stuck his foot out their striker would probably have scored anyway.
Their second came from Fyfield's decision to try and beat his man rather than boot it upfield - he had plenty of time to clear it, in my opinion. He seemed to go to pieces after that and was quickly substituted.
I don't think we should be too upset at the result. As the manager says, it's a learning experience and City are a great team to watch.

With Smith, Henderson and Carlisle off the wage bill I think all York City supporters are about to find out the limit of the clubs ambition, in this transfer window.

We play some lovely stuff that at times does not get the reward it deserves. First half at Chesterfield and the game at Fleetwood being two examples.
It's evolution not revolution and I look fwd to seeing the players we need coming in during the summer to give us a real chance of a play-off or a promotion place without falling just that bit short as we are at the moment.

Not surprisingly if the stories about him being ill are correct. So I don't really think his second half no show is much of a surprise.
I played a reasonable standard of football I was told never, never, pass across field if your near or in your penalty area. Some body tell Kerr.Good entetaining game yes Fyfield had a mare but didnt Walker have a worse one.
On Fyfield, as someone me mentioned above Exeter targeted him in the second half and doubled up on him every time our centre backs or midfield had it, yet we still continued giving him hospital balls and no protection from midfield. He had the hardest job on the field in the second half so little wonder he appeared to struggle

In my opinion I think an area where we suffers is at full back... Fyfeild and Danny P are a couple of the biggest hearted players on our books but without being natural left/right backs often fail to provide the neccesary overlapping options when going forward and occasionally struggle to help our centre backs when defending... losing Meredith was a bigger blow than anticipated and playing Oyebanjo out of position has yet to work for me. However, I will always back GM's judgement over mine and remain delighted to hear our name being read out in the Division Two results. My current concern is the impending vacancy at Doncaster once Dean Saunders departs for Wolves.... I fear that Millsy will be on their radar this week!

Whilst I do agree that Mills will not be high on Donny's list, if at all, their current manager, Saunders, was 47 and had not managed a single game in the League when they appointed him - what's more, they were in a higher division than they currently are today.

Anyway.. First half I thought we were really good, couldn't see anything other than a home win.
Second half we just didn't seem up for it, Walker was particularly poor.
Positives, I thought Potts and McLaughlin were both excellent.
It's a defeat where we should have picked up at least a point, but nothing to panc about as we look a decent League 2 side, I can see a good run of form coming soon.

First half we were excellent and deserved to be leading at half time but after the break I don't know what was going on. Can home game regulars please tell me if this ridiculous habit of trying to ping every 2nd pass 40 yards that crept in in the second half is a regular thing or this was just a one off ?
Either way, we have to improve. We looked toothless all game long and need a new front man urgently.
