York City draw 0-0 at Fleetwood Town in npower League Two

CENTRE-BACK David McGurk helped York City to a clean sheet on his first appearance in a year as they drew 0-0 at Fleetwood Town.

McGurk started in place of the injured Chris Doig as the Minstermen earned a point from their npower League Two visit to Highbury.

Midfielder Tom Platt, who had been on loan at Harrogate Town, appeared on the City bench after Jonathan Smith sealed a £50,000 switch to Luton Town.

Smith's move to Kenilworth Road - where he made six appearances during a recent loan spell - will go through on Tuesday, January 1, subject to a medical.

Not a bad point that and it sounds like we could have won it in the end. Hopefully the Smith money is going to go towards a new centre half and striker which should see us safe this season.

As Duffy says, not a bad point at all. Sounds like Walker (and others) were very unlucky not to score - can't complain too much, they hit the target but were beaten by a 'keeper at the top of his game. Great to keep a clean sheet, McGurk and Smith both sound like they had very good games.

Good riddance to J Smith? Behave, if you take time to look at the footage from the early games his winning of second balls & link up play with Coulson was very good, he's clearly good enough to play League 2 football as he showed at Swindon, he wasn't really given a chance & the club have accepted a big offer so I don't blame him to go play regular games else where, he's a winner & wants to play all the time. Good luck to the lad!

Lets see if the money is used in January. Plenty of rumours flying about regarding possible targets as usual. I have a feeling we might well benefit from his sale in the long run.

Just when I thought the posts on here were beginning to be intelligent again.. "nice holiday for the McGills"?
I dont know the McGills but I do know that they put money into the club from their family business last week to cover wages after the postponed game so that players got their christmas wages and that they headed a queue of ... actually It was just them when they put their own money into City to stop the club folding forever. Like the McGills or not, the club may not be here without them so maybe at least grudging respect is deserved rather than poorly thought inuendo about the incoming transfer fee. I don't know about anyone else but I feel a sense of relief to have TY back in the starting 11 & I just hope Keith the Lad is right. On the subject of the McGills they seem good owners to me, yes its nothing without the fans but as we saw recently we have a few $£!" heads along for the ride so if the McGills make the odd faux pas then I will happily forgive that for the pleasure of having City to support.
Still disappointed from Chesterfield who were nothing special, need to get the consistence of performance especially defending & still hoping a couple of our forwards start hitting the sweet spot, Come on city lets go again!!!

It has not been the right move comng back to York City for Jonathan Smith, so good luck to him at Luton Town. He will fit in better there, and we have got a decent fee for him. I sincerely hope that we use the money well. Todays 0-0 draw at Fleetwood was about the best result that we could have expected. Its another precious point towards safety.

Great performance, we should have won the game. Especially with walkers chance which went wide, pleased we performed for the full 90 and not just 45!! We have got a great deal for J. Smith, was poor at the start of the season then didn't look interested or look like he was putting in 100% when he came back! For the people saying we need a new centre half, i dissagree. Smith was top drawer today and a lot of people quickly forget what hes done for the club, TY was immense. Like he's never been away! Rodman and Blair were very good too! Can't fault anyone today!

RooBeck says...

The new Fleetwood boss, Graham Alexander, in a post-match interview with BBC Radio Lancashire, admitted that this was a point gained by his team rather than two dropped. He said City were the better side in the first-half and it was about evens in the second and but for the Fleetwood keeper, we would have got the three points! So, a good performance and result! Pleased Dave McGurk turned in a strong performance and if GM gives him his chance of a run in the side, I'm sure he won't let anyone down and will make the most of the opportunity!! Can't wait for Burton and Exeter and let's keep on the front foot now and bag some more points! COYR.

Hope GM is more thorough in his scouting research in January than in summer.

Any York City fan who had seen J Smith play previously knew the type of player he was. Combative, energetic ball winner. The lads control and passing was never his strong point so I was surprised to see him join.

Doesn't fit with the midfield passing game that City now play. Unfortunately GM found that out after he signed him.

With three full time coaches at the club, I now expect any player we sign should have been watched on numerous occasions. We cannot afford any more mistakes.

Excellent point for City and defensively much stronger as we defended from the front. Good to see McGurk back and hopefully the Parslow/Smith knockers will go back in their box. Good bit of business getting £50k for Smith especially as it's from Luton's bank account!
Need to spend it on a striker who can score as, clearly, Reedy doesn't fit in Mills' plans and Walker doesn't get nearly enough.

Just finished reading the City Are Back book. An inspirational read & a piece of football history that can never be taken away from our Football Club.

Football supporters don't really do history & nostalgia, as a team and its manager is as only as good as its recent results.

Thumbing through the book there are reasons for optimism & evidence of our achilles heel that were evident right through our glorious final season in the Conference.

Firstly, the commitment to a progressive passing style of football that was often breathtaking to watch.

Secondly, an away record that was infinitely better than our home form (ring any bells?)

Thirdly, the resilience and never say die spirit of a core of players which says everything about the togetherness of the group.

On the down side, there was never a settled back four throughout the whole season & our open style often led to the concession of cheap goals e.g Darlington (Twice), Gateshead. The improved standard of Div 2 will simply not let us get away with it.

Some of GM's acquisitions were questionable and added little to the quality of the squad eg Ashikodi, Brown, Swallow. The same could be said of Bullock, the departed Smith, Blanchett etc etc.

So, as we approach 2013, in a nutshell my new years wishes are pretty simple:

Keep on keeping on with the pass and move philosophy

Acquire new recruits that will actually add to the team e.g wily, physical striker to allow for plan B

A settled defence

Easy this football management lark!!

To the McGill critics, unless you are a Euro millions Lottery winner, back off. Regular "Press" readers will recall that for the season ending 2010 we lost £275k and in the season ending 2011 we lost well over £500k. These losses have to funded from somewhere and our case it is Rob McGill and his family. They are not Russian "Oiligarchs", just passionate supporters who are putting money into the club, which others seem either unable or unwilling to do. If they walk away, which I sincerely hope they don't, where would that leave us? Douglas Craig eventually walked (and did other things) due to criticism. Let's not see history repeat itself. To the critics either shut up or put your money where your mouth is.

York are deffo looking at signing a striker, I was getting a taxi back from dropping my car off at leamo rd garage on the 14th, a lady pulled over asking for directions to the ground, she said she was off to see the manager, I replied was it to do with a transfer, she replied she couldnt say, I then asked if she could confirm it was a striker, she said all I can say is they need 1. I swear to god this is the truth.

Its not the McGills money though, its JMPs and is loans offset against the clubs only asset the ground and has a HUGE interest rate attached to it. The passionate supporters of the club put their hard earned cash into saving the club when we needed them most to raise 80k to keep the club alive with the trust. I appreciate that we need someone to bank roll the club until we get the ground sorted out and stop paying the 100K a year to the FL but its not the McGills own money and simple an invest from their family owned company. Some of the losses over the past 8 years are also down to the McGills very bad business decisions for example appointing Brass as the manager and the rest is history.

Its very easy being a passionate supporter when you are playing chairman of a football club with someones elses money!!

Keith is your real name Hans Christian Anderson?. For this is the best fairy tale since the ugly duckling. If City can not afford to sign Kearnsy back on loan, they are highly unikely to splash out a massive fee for a player who is non leagues hottest property at the moment.
