Paul Hillaby hits heights amid golf in the raw

First published in Sport

THE York Par-Tee Golf Society could well be christened ‘none but the brave’ after members defied the wretched weather to continue their winter tour.

Round five was in severe danger of being postponed when the original venue of Aldwark Manor Golf Club was flooded.

Tour organiser Martin Alderson-Crombie switched the venue to the Harrogate-based Rudding Park course, one of only a few in the area still open.

The conditions were the worst the Society has played in, but that did not prevent Paul Hillaby  carding an impressive 34 points playing off a handicap of 18.

He finished seven points clear of second-placed Mark McLaren on 27, while four points further back was Gary Smith.

Jason Fletcher claimed the longest drive trophy on the seventh and Alderson-Crombie his third successive nearest the pin trophy with a six-iron shot to the par-three fifth.

Hillaby presently leads the tour by 14 points from Smith.

The sixth round of the tour will be held in January, date and venue to be announced.
