Groin surgery rules injury-hit striker Oli Johnson out of York City reckoning

INJURY-PLAGUED York City forward Oli Johnson is facing at least another month on the sidelines after undergoing groin surgery.

Johnson, 25, has been restricted to only six substitute League appearances since his arrival at Bootham Crescent, having endured a frustrating succession of niggling problems.

He has only started one match – the 4-0 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat by Coventry – since his summer switch from Oxford and manager Gary Mills is now facing several more weeks without his services.

On the latest setback for Johnson, who played for Norwich in the Championship as recently as 2010, Mills said: “He will have a little operation on his groin that will keep him out for another four to five weeks.

“It’s been tough with him because, when you sign players, the last thing you want is for them to have injury problems. He’s never really been able to get going for one reason or another, which is very disappointing but these things happen. I’m hoping that, after this, things will settle down and we will get the best out of him and he will be able to help us during the rest of the season.”

Lanre Oyebanjo was set to return to training today, with the hamstring problem that caused him to miss the trip to Plymouth having eased. Former Darlington midfielder John McReady, meanwhile, should be back in three weeks’ time following his long lay-off with a dislocated shoulder.

Bad news for the lad. Looked bright in the few matches he came on as a sub. Is the tallest of the forwards and has plenty of pace.

Shame we havent seen much of him but provide competition for places once he is fully fit.

I hope Johnson soon gets sorted out and back to fitness. Also, McCready, who I think could be an excellent player for City in years to come.
Realistically though it's going to be late in the season (at the earliest) that we'll see the best of them. Along with Coulson, that's three good players out.
Now's the time for us to support the manager and the players who are fit and consolidate the league position, hopefully starting with a win on Saturday.

Nothing to add, you said everything I was thinking and better than I would have written it.

Honestly even at his age you wonder if he will ever be fully fit. He came with a catalogue of injuries and has just carried on in the same vain. My mums china is less fragile.

He's just one of those forever injury stricken players and always has been. Will be good to get McReady back though, one of the most exciting players in the squad.

Poor signing who has the knack of getting injured without playing. I often wonder how stringent the medical was before he signed on for York City. Dont tell me that he is on a two year deal, he isnt is he?

I do wonder that myself given fans of his previous clubs were stating he never played through injury at the time we signed him.

like i have said,many,many times on here,johnson is a damp squib.waste of a wage,and so is,bullock,blanchett
,and the biggest waste of money is des lyttle.we have gone backwards since he arrived.come on jason mcgill, get your hand in your pocket in january, and lets have some quality signings,to strengthen the squad.for all the money we made in the fa trophy final and play off final,we have spent bugger all.

He'll be a good player when fit, just getting fit is his problem at the moment!

The last time he was fit was something like three years ago.

Tough time for him but given his history we can't afford to be sentimental when contracts come up for renewal. We have a better player in Reed sat on the bench.

This is an interesting quote from the Bristol Rovers manager;
"York have a bit of height about them. They pass the ball a little bit but don't seem to be blessed with a huge amount of pace throughout the team. "

Their scouts must have been at the wrong games as they seem to have everything wrong. I really hope we start strongly as we will surprise them if they are working on thislevel of inteligence.

Come on City!!
