THE Co-operative Funeralcare UK Masters Tour rolls into York this weekend.

New Earswick Indoor Bowls Club, in Huntington Road, will host round four of the eight-stage competition on Saturday, starting at 8.30am.

A field of 32 players will do battle on the greens for a place in the Masters Tour final next May, where they will meet the other seven regional tournament winners and the eight winners from the Scottish and Welsh qualifier regions.

The finalists will play off for two Co-operative Funeralcare Tourcard places in each of the televised World Bowls Tour events for next season.

The Poole round was won by Danny Denison, Matthew Whyers took the honours in the Erewash event and Daniel Gough triumphed in the Cynon Valley stage of the competition.

A tournament spokesman said: “It’s an early morning 8.30am start for the players and, as the event is played off in one day, it is going to be a long one.

“The final match is expected to be played at around 9pm.

“Lots of nerve and stamina is required from the players.”

Meanwhile, York Indoor Bowls Club’s Yetton Trophy team look to progress at the expense of Doncaster today, with the game starting at 12.30pm.

On Saturday, York’s Thanet Road base hosts the Denny Cup tie between Cumbria and Spalding at 10am, which features four international players.

At noon, York play leaders Selby in the North Eastern League.

On Sunday, York face a tough task as they play Cumbria in the Egham Trophy, starting at 10.30am.
