York City recall Jonathan Smith from Luton Town loan spell

YORK City today recalled midfielder Jonathan Smith from his loan spell with Luton Town.

The 26-year-old, who scored in the Hatters' 3-0 win over Alfreton in Blue Square Bet Premier last weekend, will be available for Saturday's home clash with Bristol Rovers in npower League Two.

Smith rejoined City in the summer after a protracted move from Swindon Town, but he fell out of favour in the weeks before moving to Kenilworth Road.

Good move hope he is now fitter and hungrier than earlier in the season. On his day Smith is a real powerhouse and can win those second balls in the midfield.

Good move by the club, goals from early games show Smiths link play with the front 3 to get the goals. Got a good feeling about Saturday!

Great timing Gary good to see we can still upset Luton and their fans! Luton have top 4 game away at Newport tonight!!

Providing he puts a shift in then yes, a good move. Does he really want to be here anymore though?

He is a good player but I hope his attitude is right after the comments he allegedly made at Luton.

He needs to apologise for sucking up to the non league club. Though only if he made them....which I'm not sure he did.

I mean, would you?

The comments printed above seem to indicate that the fans are happy to see Jonathan Smith come back. Not so sure that the feeling will be mutual though.

I wouldn't believe too much of the suppposed comments that were made by him via a Luton tabloid, we aren't winning second balls & on his day he can do that, you don't become a bad player all of a sudden, this could be the lift we need, Coulson has been a huge loss, let's hope that this will drive us on again!

Probably not, and I for one hope he does show what we all know he's capable of.

Hello flair28.

You must try and understand the animosity felt by many York fans to the Luton supporters. Having sharp coins whizzing past your face is an experience few will forget especially as there were many children in the York end.

On a lighter note, many in York were delighted when Smith returned to the fold. Effort and desire to win when on the field was often lacking from someone who had done well at Swindon.
Bit of an enigma really.
Will Luton get promotion this year?
It's very much in the balance but I don't think your gate figures will hold up too long if the Conference becomes your second home.

This is a great opportunity for Jonathan Smith to impress the manager and stake a big claim for a regular start in the City side. Let's hope he takes it and plays in a manner that will provide us with more determination and drive and give us other options should our Plan A style not be succeeding! A good decision by GM and hope he has him in the starting XI for the Bristol Rovers game and that he is raring to go! COYR.

I appreciate animosity towards Luton if we were playing you or if there were Luton fans on here stoking the fire but its simply a story about a player come back to York! Just think there must be better things to talk about amongst fellow York fans than slagging off Luton. And the racist undertones are nothing to do with Luton the club, he's just being a moron!
Will we get promoted? The league this season is awful so it's our best chance yet but I'm not confident from what I've seen so far. But, if we're playing badly and we're still up there, it could bode well. We have the best striker in the Conference by a mile in Andre Gray so fingers crossed. As for crowds, I've been expecting them to drop each season but season tickets went UP this year, so who knows. Seems like you boys will do Ok but not sure about the play-offs this season. Consolidate this year then see what happens next, I guess?

Never understood why he went on loan in the first place after the chasing we did for him in the summer, nor why he was dropped. He played in the same style as when we had him in the conference, so if GM did not like his style of play why did he buy him?
Is this in fact a change of tactic by GM, a realisation that the passing game needs to be supplemented by blood, sweat and tears.
I fear though that such a change, although a sensible one, in itself will not be enough until we get a bigger front man to win headers and turn chances into goals.

We met many Luton "Gents" after the play-off final. Flair28 seems to also fall into that category.
I'm sure a lot of us continue to look with interest at the results in BSP -probably because we still know more about the teams down there. If we keep our collective nerve I don't think we will be travelling back to some of old haunts. Luton do have one of the best strikers in Gray and one man may just tip the balance. However I think flair is right we don't need to be obsessed with the Hatters any more. At least not until and unless we're in the same division.
For us -we're all hoping we'll click into form but last season we also had periods where fluidity was lacking. The same negative prejudices were being expressed about players but we came good. I'm not saying coming good will lead to the same ultimate result this term but we are on a learning curve. Part of that learning curve will be to assess whether players have further potential for improvement. I'm sure some will have better second halves to the season others will be moved on sooner or later.
It will be interesting to see whether Gateshead's new boss will want to extend Bullock's loan or whether he too will be returning. Hopefully both with points to prove.

Football forums and parents at junior football - the ugly side of the game ?
I've nothing against Luton - feela bit sorry for them even - its Leeds I don't like.
Good luck to JS - a fresh start for him and City !

Incidentally, could have sworn Duffy posted earlier. A shrinking thread methinks

I see the Luton Town manager is blaming his team's lack of fight for their 5-2 defeat at Newport last night. In particular he missed Jonathan Smith, as well as Kovacs, who is suspended.
It sounds as if Smith has been making a solid contribution down there and hopefully he will carry that on for City on Saturday, assuming he's selected. It comes down to his mental attitude - if he really wants to play for us I think it could be a successful return. I just hope our fans react positively to him and give him that chance to redeem himself.

Good move - now play him in the team!

Next - big centre forward and a commanding centre half. We need more muscle otherwise we'll be nowhere near play offs.

How are the mini season ticket sales going compared with previous years?

Phil, Leeds says...

Time will tell if Smith sees any future at York and whether he's good enough to hold down his place in any case.

Watching Bradford last night it was great to see a big centre forward with a skilful co-striker playing off him and how effective that is for them. Remembering the days when City used that method and it was often successful. I'm getting sick of our 451 formation at home - time for a change.

ok let's just carry on playing this tippy, tappy stuff that has brought Arsenal so much success over the last seven seasons and again last night. We do need a bigger, more physical player than Walker in attack and a commanding centre back. Roll on January.

We need a bit of both styles really. After seeing the best of the 'tippy tappy' style played last season (and occasionally this season), I never want to see another hoofball York City team again - but there are probably certain teams a more direct and physical approach would work better against.

arsene.about.york says...
7:08pm Thu 13 Dec 12

I agree with you entirely about hoofball teams but, as we saw the other night with Arsenal all the possession in the world means nothing if you can't put the ball in the net. We don't have anyone who is prepared to get in the opponents penalty area and make a nuisance of himself. If we could get someone like that in January I would have no more worries about us finishing the season in the bottom half of this league.
