Selby Warriors ARLC ‘A’ won 22-14 at Moorends Thorne Marauders ‘A’ to leapfrog their hosts into sixth place in Pennine League division seven.

Selby’s string were strengthened slightly when the first-team game was postponed, with Wayne Fennell, Zennon Horrox and Ben Harris drafted in – and it was a good job because Moorends turned a strong team out.

An end-to-end game followed, with the hosts starting on top before excellent work from forwards Horrox, Ben Clarke and Matt Emett got Selby a foothold in the game Wingman Arron Sharp scored a fine try off a peach of a pass from Fennell, and a good pass from Nick Weaver put Chris Birch over, Jimmy Hanson goaling for a 10-4 lead, only for Moorends to level before half-time.

The hosts had the slope after the interval and early pressure gave them a try.

But Fennell then started to come into the game with an astute kicking game before scoring a good try which Hanson converted.

Moorends had a couple of chances but Birch’s second converted try sealed Selby’s win. Both he and fellow newcomer Emett again showed fantastic potential.
