WORLD kickboxing champion Courtney Catterson will create history in another ring tonight, writes Tony Kelly.

The 16-year-old York High school pupil will become the first girl in the history of York Amateur Boxing Club to appear for the club in a competitive bout. Her debut is at Tramways Working Men’s Club as part of a York ABC bill that features a total of 15 bouts.

Said the teenager, who less than two months ago was crowned the world junior kick-boxing champion in Slovakia: “I’m a bit nervous about it, but I just want to give it a go. If I’m no good at it then I will go back to kickboxing.”

York ABC head coach Billy Wilson said the youngster had shaped up “excellently” in training. “I’ve looked through the record books and Courtney will be the first girl to ever fight for the club on a bill, so she will be making history,” he added.

As the teenager started out on a possible new sporting career in the ring, York professional Graham Fearn has hung up his gloves.
