ERIK the belly-putter – rather than Erik the Bloodaxe – ruled in the last of the season’s club events at the KP Golf course.

The Joint Captain’s Trophy – a mixed four-ball better-ball stableford tournament played off ¾ handicap – was won by the aptly-named Dream Team of Erik Sologub and Gary Tavender.

Due to the recent wet weather the tournament was played off yellow tees and temporary greens.

Scoring was high, one fourball scoring an amazing 17 stableford points between them on the par-five 12th hole.

With only a few groups left to finish, three teams were level on 48 points with G Martin and D Roberts leading on count-back.

But with the par-four 18th left to play, Sologub and Tavender were on 46 points so one of them needed to par the last to take the trophy.

A good drive and approach shot from Sologub left him with a two putts for a four.

And deadly with a broom handle putter, he had no problem in rolling in the final putt for a four and a winning team score of 49.

The Welham Road-based club hosted the fourth East Riding Golf Alliance fixture.

But after play, Malton & Norton found themselves languishing in 11th place with a total of 554 points, well trailing leaders Heworth GC on 527.
